I want it to succeed so they’ll finish the story, but this sounds like an unbelievably rose-tinted projection of it’s eventual profit.

Watched it.....seemed a bit bloated. Not terrible, but stuff could have been cut.

I liked it. Good casting, and some of the stuff they changed, like Kynes' gender, didn't bother me at all because it wasn't like it really changed anything about the character. There's a definite sparsity of female characters in the first portion of the story, so it helped offset that, along with it just being a really good actress, anyway, who was very visually striking. Additionally, {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}yeah, seeing Liet Kynes explode like in the book would have been cool, but I think having her take a few of the villains with her was probably the more satisfying call, as well as probably better for the pacing than having to explain to the audience why the explosion happened. This kind of just gets to the point of "Paul loses one more ally and is further isolated."

I just came back, and I enjoyed it for the most part. It was simplified in a way that still retains the jist of the story. The one thing I didn't like. {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}The film seems to imply that the idea of the Muadib was implanted into the Fremen by the Bene Gesserit. Which I think goes against the fact that Paul is seen as messianic figure to different groups for different reasons. Now, what I absolutely loved were the visuals. It was indeed a feast for the eyes. It also low key feels like it's what Jordorowsky's Dune would have looked like (minus the bat shit insane things he wanted to do).

I don't remember it in the original novel. Although it's been a while since I've read it as well.

I don't even remember if she mentioned it to Paul.

2 years ain’t bad at all, I was worried it’d be longer. Now to remain spoiler-free for two flipping years ... - _ -

It's nice that my annual attempt to read Dune and then give up has coincided nicely with the release of the movie

Did they ever explain why House Atreides had to put all it's eggs in the same strategic basket?
Seems like you'd want to have either Leto or Paul stay on Caladan in case of just such an emergency.

Because it would have split their forces. And Leto needed to be on Arakkis to oversee the spice production and Freeman alliance. Paul also needed to learn from his father directly.

Include chairdogs, you cowards. Didn't those only appear in the fifth book? My only memory of them is Miles Teg's character refusing to use them.

Huh, I never thought about that, I always took it at face value. The Harkonnens were able to split their forces just fine. It could be like one poster said, that the Atreides had to commit all their resources if they hoped to succeed at Arrakis. Or, since House Atreides was being set up to fail, maybe it was a provision from the Emperor that they had to totally relocate.

The Emperor makes Leto give up rule of Caladan to another guy and makes him take his family with him.

It's nice that my annual attempt to read Dune and then give up has coincided nicely with the release of the movie Took me just over a year to read the first book. It's wonderful but so friggin dense in terms of prose and worldbuilding that it's not an easy read in the least. I finished it with like three days to spare before the movie came out. Loved the film - it felt its length at times, but I have no real complaints beyond that. The stuff they kept was handled very well and the stuff they changed I had no problem with. Can't wait for part two!
