MGSV is a game I just can't form a consistent opinion about.
Like, the game is so clearly unfinished, the plot is...hell, I don't even know, Kiefer is good but barely even talks (the jeep ride with Skullface is especially bad), the explanation for Quiet having her tits hanging out all the time is laughable, The Skulls are just The Borg 2.0, environments are repetitive, etc. Skullface just looks stupid, etc..
But, the game can be incredible at times, with the stealth gameplay being the best I've ever seen. I loved the base building and soldier acquisitions, and taking out enemy bases using your AI partner can be awesome (except D-Walker, I think I used that only once). And you truly feel like you've earned your powers by the end of the campaign. I also loved that you could complete the game not killing anyone if you so chose.
What did you all think of this game five-six years later?

I can't form an opinion at all. I didn't make it that far in the series - finished MGS 1 & 2 but I never finished a substantial portion of either MGS3 or 4, and never even picked up 5 (Even though I own it, somehow)
One of these days I'm going to play through the whole series again, but the last time I tried that I was just absolutely dreadful at MGS1.

I'm actually in the middle of trying to finally finish the game. Half the game is almost the anti-MSG game. Lack of strong boss battles, limited dialog, and a very bland story.
And yet it's probably the best gameplay I've ever seen.
Just a weird weird game. Wonder how much of the outside BS between Kojima and Konami influenced all the unbalanced elements.

'Weird' is a great way to put it. I would guess that the game being unfinished meant the game was never going to be any kind of cohesive product. As you said, the gameplay is amazing, and some of the missions and cutscenes are great. Other stuff makes no sense (even for Kojima) or is just repeating something that came earlier. This will have to go as 'what might have been' with Silent Hills.

I thought I beat the game after the giant robot battle, then the credits rolled … and then I got dropped in a brand new open world to do more things and just didn’t care anymore.

I definitely agree with having complicated feelings about this game. I swing heavily from “okay, wow, Kojima is WAY overcorrecting away from the ‘you don’t play MGS, you watch MGS’ criticism,” to “well, the gameplay is pretty good, I’ll give it that,” to “I’m actually having a lot of fun with this,” to “wow, this game’s story is clearly unfinished,” to “wait...holy crap, this is actually one of the most clever and thought-provoking games I’ve ever played, largely BECAUSE the story is unfinished and dissonant.” I’ll put it to you this way: I’ve recently had events in my life where I accomplished things which have been my driving force for years, and suddenly have found myself not knowing what to do with my life now that I’ve finally caught the car I’ve been chasing. Given that, a game in which the ostensible climactic final boss fight happens 2/3 of the way through the game, while the remainder of the game sort of lingers and trucks along without any clear guiding idea anymore, REALLY resonates with me, and is actually really thematically clever when you think about it. I’ve also read and listened to some pretty thought-provoking defenses of the game. This video essay, in particular, is one I highly recommend to possibly get a different point of view (SPOILERS for the game, obviously): youtu.be/hV4wY2rjAWY

I thought it was a lot of fun, though the 'ending' such as it was of Lil Liquid and company getting away was just sort of anticlimactic.
Quiet was great, but the explanation was so silly you wonder why they even bothered. If you want to have a character who's fully cheesecake, fine, but don't gimme a lame-ass reason too.
The mission thing where you have to identify the language that is immune to the nanomites or whatever is nonsense, but most Metal Gear plot elements are convoluted nonsense too so eh.

It has damn good graphics for the time and some good moments here and there, but it really is an unfinished game. Open World Metal Gear could work if you had more than sand and jungle areas. But here it kind of feels empty. I think Metal Gear works better in a contained area and not so much open world. Then again I feel the same about the Batman Arkham games and everyone loves City, so it might be a me thing.
I also wouldn't even call it MGSV as it's more Peace Walker 2. Story is a mess and I was not a big fan of the Mother Base stuff.
It could have been a once in a generation game and there's potential but that might be why the game is such a disappointment. Easily the worst of the Metal Gear Solid games.

It's what I'd call one of the best podcast games to ever exist. The story wasn't good but the gameplay? Mission selection? Perfect for a podcast. I remember playing this game for months while listening to podcasts and albums.
I've been wanting to go back into the game for a while, just haven't gone back in.

Phantom Pain is basically when Kojima basically perfected a lot of the nuances with gameplay and at the same time his ability to balance the goofiness of the MGS universe and the serious of its message completely fell apart. Yes the plot was unfinished, but various parts of the narrative are fairly unimpressive without it and outside the famous twist, not much of the climax really lands, especially with how grimdark the setup was in Ground Zeroes.
Very fun title to play, but MGSV is very lucky that Portable Op's existence means it doesn't have the weakest story in 3D Metal Gear game.

I still think if they didn't waste all that time making the game open-world when it really, REALLY didn't need to be and focused on the story, Phantom Pain would've been f***ing amazing. Like, a lot of it is there. The gameplay is fantastic and there are bits of the story that work.
But what did we really end up with? A broken story and an open world with almost nothing to f***ing do; I gave up on riding everywhere and just called the helicopter to get me when I played because the world is so barren. I get that it fits with the location, but some locations don't work with open world games. So many unnecessary things were done for the sake of doing them (Kiefer Sutherland being one)and if I'm honest, the way Konami treated Hideo Kojima was shitty, but I do see the mindset of going "Okay, you gotta tone this down".

I enjoyed playing it, but I got bored of the open world pretty quickly.
By the 3rd time I got sent to that wretched air field I was absolutely sick of it. Completing side missions that took me there spoilt the impact of being sent to infiltrate it with the main story.
I never completed it. I got stuck where you fight a giant mecha and I hated that fight. I'm not a fan of boss fights that urge you to go against the core of the game--big shooting bits like that in a stealth game, or vice versa, stealth sections in run and gun kill 'em all shooters.

I downloaded both of the games last year but have yet to actually play them. It was during the summer sale of last year. I wonder if I should give them a go.

I had the itch to replay it recently and I think this vid helped sum up my feelings on it:
It's SO mechanically good in gameplay, but the story is so disappointing.

Very good for when it came out but you can def point out the flaws once you took a step back

In general I kind of feel like whoever the hell Tomokazu Fukushima was he kept Kojima's worst inclinations in check because he's never been the same without him.

When MGSV is great, it's some of the best in the series. When it's weak, it's really flimsy. Skull Face is such a weak villain, though thankfully, the game works better if you look at it more as the turning point, where Big Boss becomes the man he is for the rest of the franchise, where any illusions the player has about him being a good person can be dashed.

It definitely needed a lot more focusing. I don't think they necessarily should have done away with big explorable areas, though, but they definitely could like shrunk them and, again, focused them in a bit more. Like think of the giant forest areas in MGS3. Pretty damn big spaces to crawl around in, especially for MGS, but it still felt very purposeful and funnels you forward through the narrative.
Also, Kojima, mate, just cut the crap around why you want to have sexy ladies in your games. Just be honest about it. Yoko Taro is completely upfront with why he puts sexy ladies in his games. When asked why he gave 2B a big butt in Nier Automata, he just matter of factly went, "I wanted a woman with a big butt in the game", and people just went, "Ok, fair enough" and we moved on. Instead to this day the game has that cloud of a nonsense explanation for Quiet just hanging over the game.

This game had such potential to really explore the lore of the series. I was looking forward to seeing how Big Boss became a villain, but nope we needed that shitty swerve. Also, I hate how many plot points are unfinished. I'd like to have actually seen a good resolution to the Eli story.
