“Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards is in advanced negotiations with Sony Pictures Television to become permanent host of the venerable quiz show, taking the reins of the syndicated powerhouse that was fronted by Alex Trebek for 36 years.

Mike Richards will not host the syndicated Jeopardy! after multiple controversies from his past emerged in the last few weeks. He just announced his exit in an internal memo.

The show already had started production, which has been canceled for today as the search for a permanent host resumes. Meanwhile, guest hosts once again will be stepping in, with Richards remaining an executive producer.

“I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing,” Richards said in his memo (read it in full below). “I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence.”

It seems weird for the blurb to preface it with the note about him being an executive producer since he's hosted plenty of other things in the past.

The shortlived Pyramid revival on GSN, and...?? Really I am drawing a blank.

Wonder if anyone not in the know glances and thinks it's "Kramer"? (boy that would exacerbate the people upset that Burton didn't get the job)

Interesting. Some fans weren't really high on his job on the show and just liked others better.

I hope his fans don't try to take him not getting the job in a certain direction.

First thing I thought of was in 2000 when George W Bush asked Dick Cheney to find him a running mate and after a long interview process came up with…..Dick Cheney.

I didn't find Levar to be all that impressive of a host and he's 64 years old. I think they want somebody who's going to be in for the long haul. I didn't see every guest host but Richards and Ken Jennings seemed to be the two best by far.

I know people love Burton, but Richards was great. I really think objectively he and Ken Jennings felt the most natural up there out of all of the other guests hosts.

I honestly like the guy they have this week. There's something unsettling about Jennings and Richards that doesn't sit well with me. I cant explain what.

Richards was pretty good in his run and he probably has the least amount of commitments considering he's already on board as an executive producer.

And it makes me sad because I love LeVar Burton in Star Trek, Reading Rainbow, and various other things. But he wasn't good at all. Then again, he had some pretty dire contestants and noncompetitive games to deal with, too. And at least he wasn't Dr. Oz.
