I still think his heel run was criminally underrated.

This was a great listen. Pretty insightful. “That was a kick in the balls.” 😆

AJ Styles in NJPW, perhaps? He was treated well in some indies and he’s pretty much a WWE legend now, but when he first challenged Okada he was still recovering from the Dixieland stuff that didn’t help either him or Nick Aldis/Magnus. Aj wasn’t troubled or washed up though was he?

Thanks to Impact overweight tag team specialist Bubba Ray Dudley briefly became the most hated heel in pro wrestling.

We've missed a huge one here: William Regal. He was a mess on booze and pills by 1997, had gotten grossly out of shape, got so drunk on a flight that he pissed on a flight attendant and passed out, got fired from WCW and had that horrendous run as the Real Man's Man, which ended with him going to rehab. After his second release from WCW, the WWF rehired him for developmental, which led to the match with Benoit at the Pillman show that earned him an invite back to the main roster. Within months, he was the commissioner, working the top angles, and was one of the company's top hands. This is a good one. I can recall he got so heavy that he had to start wearing a singlet I can remember Jake Roberts brief foray into sobriety in 1996 and his comeback to the WWF, but he was very out of shape (even in his prime he didn't look like a guy who worked out much)

Ken Anderson in TNA. Bully Ray in TNA. Bobby Lashley in TNA. Johnny Mundo in LU. Jon Moxley in AEW. Moxley was definitely not washed up or troubled when he went to aew. He was just frustrated in WWE. Big difference
