Just watching some old WCW and I'm on the part where they run the Seven vignettes. This gimmick actually looks pretty decent in my opinion... So why did they have him completely shit on it as soon as he actually debuted?
I never understood this. Seven could've been WCW's version of The Undertaker but instead they had him cut a worked shoot promo about how the gimmick sucks and how he's Dustin Rhodes. Then he basically looks like a jobber with those camo pants, like that is so much better.
Was anyone else kinda let down by this? And did you think the gimmick had potential or was Dustin dealing with too much personal issues around this time to make it work?

I think WCW audiences would have wanted Dustin Rhodes. I think Seven (if he had been allowed to continue) would have been completely rejected.

Oh, I think Seven could have absolutely worked had they at least given him a chance. Mostly because I really wanted them to follow through on the character instead of straight up burying the gimmick the instant he came out.

If he had debuted three years earlier, Bobby would have probably joked, "Why is Syxx afraid of Seven?"

It was a terrible idea to have a wrestler who’s character is a pedophile who hangs outside little boys bedroom windows promising they’ll live together in bliss. This was before Russo got to wcw and he quickly killed it when he showed up.

Dustin flat out shitting on it was the only way the gimmick could ever be entertaining IMO.
From what I understand Turner execs were concerned he came off like a pedophile in the vignettes.

Oh, it was clearly an awful idea, that's why I wanted to see where it could've gone. Late 1999 WCW was "We really do not what the hell we're doing", so I assume an implied diddler would somehow be the least of their troubles.

There's about a 7% chance of it working.

I haven't seen them since they aired, but I don't remember getting pedo vibes at all. I remember it being like was part of the kid's nightmares.
Who knows, if I watched it now, maybe I'd think diddler, but I think that generally speaking, people tend to sexualize everything. Even if it's seeing diddlers.

Considering they didn’t seem to know what they were doing at the time, I’d say nah.
Now an Uncle Fester gimmick, OTOH…

No and creepy undertones of the gimmick aside, I feel like all Dustin Rhodes gimmicks that aren't himself or Goldust are doomed to fail no matter what. I feel like most fans have it in their minds that Goldust IS the alter-ego of Dustin Rhodes and everything else is stupid.

The look was good.
The concept was...not.
It could've worked if they attached a completely different concept to the character. But a weird pedophile lurking outside of kids' windows? Nah...that doesn't have any mileage.

I mean, he didn't even last a year in the Bundy household, what makes you think he could've made it in WCW?

I don't think it would have worked no matter who they put in to that 'role'. I don't know who came up with it but trying to do a creepy supernatural-type gimmick like that in the middle of 1999 after the 'attitude era' had killed any chance of it being accepted by fans was a huge misstep. Hey, who the heck did come up with that gimmick?

Nope. Heavily over-gimmicks, comparisons to Ministry taker were inevitable. And Dustin’s issues were already starting to effect his ring work.
