Tony is fantastic, I love the guy, but he is best as the "real" commentator who can break out of character (so to speak) every once in awhile and call people out on their shit. Tony is just not great at play-by-play.

It's so awesome seeing Tony invigorated after being iffy about wrestling for so long. You can clearly tell he's having a good time working the shows.

My favourite Tony moment in AEW so far was from the first Dynamite when he put his arm around Jim Ross and called him his friend and then during Guevara/Rhodes, he talked about how great it was to be back on TNT and remembering calling Nitro and how proud he was of it.
He's had better calls and moments and is as part of the show as any wrestler is but that was the moment I knew that this weird journey for him to get back into pro wrestling ended on a happy note. It was just so wholesome.

That was great, especially when he refused to apologize, even better after hearing him on the podcast cursing like a sailor. You can tell Tony really enjoys his job and I'm glad he gets to call professional wrestling again when someone else wouldn't give him the opportunity.

Speaking of Tony going off, can't put the tweet here for language, but the latest What Happened When, he told a story about how he heard Terry Taylor (a man with a history of being a creep backstage) asked Britt Baker how he was doing and Tony texted him afterwards saying "Don't ever ask about her again, go f*** yourself".
And if you need more backing on that, Bischoff once called him a "walking HR disaster" so you know...

Tony: "Will you stop with the bullshit" The other announcers: "We apologize for the colorful language" Tony: "I don't apologize for it, you're full of shit" Not verbatim, but as close as my memory allows. Tony was on peak form tonight. Excalibur: I’d hate to give a compliment to MJF… Tony: Then don’t! Nice burn from Tony. I hate Excalibur and don't understand why he's there.

Honestly? I think all 3 announcers were at peak form last night. Tony is just thrilled to be back in wrestling and enjoying himself JR put his working cowoby hat on, because honestly I heard very little grumpy old man last night Excalibur is clearly the future voice of AEW. Honestly, outside of the name botches, JR’s been pretty good the last couple of weeks. His own banter with Callis have been hilarious at times (“Beautiful Suit, Don” still gets me because of the timing) and it does feel Punk’s return kicked him into a bit of a gear. It’s not going to last and he’s still making obvious mistakes but it’s nice. “Good god! It’s Bryan Danielson!” is an all-time call from JR.

I can’t wait to hear the sheer disdain he uses on Adam Cole Oh…oh god…I hadn’t even considered the Tony/Britt/Cole possibilities

I love it, reminds me of when Mean Gene would go into give-no-f***s mode.

All JR says is “RUBY SOHO!” but he sounds so excited. It’s likely he doesn’t know all that much about her but he called it like Ricky Steamboat showing up in the NWA. It was just a cute little call.

There are probably quite a few people I've done a complete 180 in terms of opinion on in wrestling, but Tony may be the greatest. I hated/detested/loathed him in WCW as an announcer, but wow, after getting to know his real personality a bit and his work in AEW, he's like an all time legend for me now.

And for Adam Cole's debut, JR says "Adam Cole, bay-bay!", in a way that really felt natural and not forced.

At least one WWF one still had tags, somehow

Tony was great in the NWA/early WCW and his year in WWF. He just got burnt out bad during the Monday Night Wars. Foley even told the story of getting an apology call from Tony after the infamous “butts in seats” comments (under Bischoff’s direct command) Mick wasn’t even going to take the call but his wife said Tony sounded so sad on the phone that he had to.

I think Tony's AEW run is really going to end up placing him higher on the "greatest wrestling commentators of all time" list than prior. For a lot of us, we just haven't really heard him in over a decade, I mean I didn't peep dude's other work so hearing him here and seeing how great he still is (when his peers have fallen some) just shows his longevity. Also has to be said, dude was buried for years as being terrible off his later WCW work which we know now can be put down to the fact that he was given shit to deal with. Like, you try and give a damn when Vince Russo’s posse of Jarrett, Steiner and Nash swerve you for the billionth time in a way that makes everyone involved look like dipshits. As it turns out, you give commentators something to work with (or pay them on time in Taz’s case with TNA), they’ll put out good work. Shocking, I know. That's an excellent point and I'm sure you're correct. It's just not something I really grasped as a 20-24 year old watching wrestling at the time.

The redemption of Tony Schiavone is a beautiful thing to witness. Dude was the Michael Cole of WCW and now he never fails to make me smile.
