So what happened here? Backtracking a bit. I remember hearing news in the Summer of 2001 that WWE wanted to make Test the centerpiece of the new WCW and a potential future champion. Then he defects to The Alliance. He wins the IC title, he wins the immunity battle royal. You would think he was going places there.
And then nothing in 2002....
So did he get sabotaged? Did they not care for him again like they didn't in 1999?

I genuinely don't understand why Test didn't become a bigger deal. His physique and in-ring style are like Vince's ideals, and he's not terrible on the mic. Vince has pushed many guys who were much worse but with similar physiques.
Though I guess he just happened to be around during an era when larger than life personalities are what really worked and drew people in, and there were just...so many of them that a guy with a good look and a decent personality can't compete with a bunch of dudes who have incredible and vibrant personalities all over the card.

Heck, they brought him back in 2006, even more jacked and intense than ever, something they love, and he still was barely pushed.

There was like five different times where they tried to elevate Test and make him into a bigger deal and it would just never work. 99 when he was Stephanie's boyfriend, 2001 as a heel in the Alliance, 2002 as the muscle of the UnAmericans, 2003 during his Testicle face run with Stacy as his manager which he screwed up because IIRC he missed a show due to bad weather after ignoring requests to fly in a day early, and then when they brought him back for his ECW run in 2006 when he was super roided up.
Apparently he was kind of a cocky guy behind the scenes so I could see him maybe rubbing people in power the wrong way and them then deciding to not go any further with his pushes despite him checking a lot of the boxes they were looking for.

I always kinda felt bad for Test. They tried pushing him so many times.....and no one cared.

I don't think he ever stood a chance after being made to look like a blithering idiot following the wedding angle. Getting your ass kicked by DX about 17 times and doing a huge bucket of nothing in terms of revenge doesn't exactly set you up for better things

You can argue Vince McMahon was a more personal opponent for Triple H, but wouldn't Test be better for both workrate and the fact that he was meant to be Stephanie's husband?

I think Phosphor Glow is on the right track. I was a fan of Test, he had a presence and was a good hoss worker, but he was not on the same level as the huge pool of stars in the WWF/E at the time(s) he was working there. When Lesnar debuted in '02 you could instantly tell who they wanted to push, and a lot of the other hosses went to the back of the line.
Also, Test was just a dumb name. They tried salvaging it with Stacy and the "Testicles" schtick, and it might have gotten over had they done it sooner, but by then it was too little too late.

I still wonder whose idea it was to switch from Test to HHH for Stephanie's boyfriend. I'm sure WWF would find a way to ruin the wedding but still, the switch had long lasting effects on wrestling the last 20+ years. Part of me thinks HHH did put himself over for the change from Test to HHH but part of me also thinks it was someone in WWF's idea as a way to get a new storyline, HHH in the top spot, Stephanie heel but no feeling that it would change their lives and WWF.

The thing about Test is he had the looks, he had the move set, he had the agility ... but he had no charisma/personality for the main event.

I always thought that they could have done Test/HHH at Armageddon, with Steph still turning. They do the exact promo with Vince/Steph/HHH the next night, causing Vince to leave and from there, you at least have Test coming off of a main event match.

Remember when he won that immunity battle royal and could go a whole year without being fired….and nothing came of it? Lesnar came in and I think that might have been the final nail for him.

I just realized he could've been sattled with Reverend D-von in '02.
D-VON: Testify!
And then Test destroys someone. What could've been, I guess.

Test was a good hand in the ring, he had a good big man match with Brock Lesnar at King of the Ring 2002.
The whole "Testicle" thing never got over and I can't think of too many people who would walk around with a shirt that says "I'm a testicle" on it.
When he came back in 2006 roided out of his mind, I thought for sure he was going to beat Lashley for the ECW title but he was just a contender and then popped up in TNA briefly in 07 before his passing.

He had a stunningly good match with Brock when Brock debuted. King of the Ring, I think. Even got his best promo line (thats a short list) in: "This Sunday, the Next Big Thing meets my next big boot!" I did say it was a short list.
But I think he was damaged in terms of the upper card the minute he was dumped at the wedding and then treated it like no big deal, and hell, was even working as a heavy for Stephanie and HHH a few weeks later! The crowds loved him in summer 99, but that pretty much killed him.
He did have a decent run in early 2001, but got injured, and lost his momentum. He had potential but booking and in ring never fully connected. Which is a shame, as his music ruled, and he had an awesome big boot.
EDIT - Ok, I genuinely paused a second to have a drink and someone wrote pretty much exactly the same post!
