With NXT being refocused on its PC talent and the spate of roster cuts this year, it appears that WWE might be closing the gates on independent wrestlers looking for the Promised Land. Will such a move ultimately hurt WWE?
Please explain/discuss along with voting.

I could see them going full homegrown leading to some big names a la Cena, Batista, Orton, Lesnar...but I could also see these new guys getting just as screwed over as everyone else nowadays because they kneecap the most ready made wrestlers that feel handpicked from a checklist of things Vince likes in a wrestler just the same as they do an indy standout.

They change their minds every few years, in the mid 00s they didnt want to hire any indie guys because they had in ring "bad habits". Then they had a ton of Deep South and FCW meathead washouts so they focused on more indy talent when they started NXT. Vince isnt interested in pushing those guys. So were back at meatheads. It will change again in a few years.

There is literally no such thing as a kiss of death for WWE unless they sell to someone who immediately shutters the whole promotion.

No, they'll hire two hundred or so guys fresh out of failing to make it in other sports, get ten guys that are main roster worthy then either quietly change course and start hiring people with wrestling experience, or make a big shocking signing from AEW's pool of young lions and change course after that.

Nah. WWE knows when to adapt when they need to.
If they hit a point where they know they'll need more outside stars then they'll do it, they just haven't hit that point yet and that's furthermore emphasized given most of their talent come from outside. Even if the next 5 years all new talent are homegrown it won't eclipse their outside talent.

They'll still sign more established names. Just fewer of them and in some cases they'll go straight to the main roster, especially when they sign somebody who has been heavily featured in aew.
It'll be more like Zayn and PAC, a couple of more experienced guys to carry the in-ring action on a roster of otherwise greener wrestlers before they move-up. Rather than DIY staying there to be multiple time champions.

They aren't getting any homegrown stars with their trademark 50/50 booking.

They survived this long. Impact is still going. WWE will bury us all.

Nothing is ever really a 'hard rule' in WWE.
They say they're not signing small indy talents, but I guarantee if Darby Allin became available*, that rule would dissapear faster than a bottle of Prosecco in the teacher's lounge.
*I mean, they'd probably rename him 'Sammy Skullface' & job him out every week, but still.

They change their mind every few years but for now they are getting results with homegrown talent like Bianca and Montez so you have seen results and hoping for a few more

I guess the "question behind the question" is how the business as a whole responds to this new direction from WWE. During the last ten years, it has become more possible than ever (even without AEW) for wrestlers to make as much money on the indies, if not more, than in the WWE/NXT system. Whether that continues, and to what extent, might depend on the extent to which wrestling fans continue to support WWE as opposed to than shifting their focus to the "real" wrestling promotions. Will the other major promotions like AEW and New Japan embark on a charm offensive to compete directly with WWE for those casual fans?

Nah, because Vince will put in the effort to make it work so he can prove himself right that old NXT didn't work even though he's the reason the NXT call ups didn't work.

Hear me out.
I think WWE have a point by getting rid of these indy wrestlers and going the more homegrown route.
There was far too many wrestlers in the company who had nothing else going for them apart from the fact that they were "good wrestlers"
That isn't enough for me. I need gimmicks, characters, personalities, unique ring attires, good vignettes/promos.
Put it this way. Who am I more intrigued by - Tony D'Angelo or Bobby Fish? Its Tony D'Angelo. I have never heard of the guy but that little vignette makes me think " I need to check this guy out next week"... "pure Rasslers" like Fish, Thatcher, Roderick Strong, Kyle O Reilly etc never made me think that.
They might be good in the ring but nobody whos never watched wrestling before is leaving the channel on.
When I was a 3 year old, it was guys like Doink, Papa Shango and Yokozuna who got me hooked. I doubt I would've been mad for wrestling if my first impression was Mick McManus vs Billy Robinson.

Vince changes his mind constantly. I would not be at all surprised if he swings the other way next year or something.

WWE goes back and forth a lot. Too many things they do are all or nothing approaches.
In a few years, it may very well pivot the other way again and they throw money at whatever indies guys are floating around still.

I mean, isn't coming up with compelling characters and stuff the job of the people running the show? They already overscript everything to shit, so why's that burden suddenly on the wrestlers now?

None of the new NXT characters feel all that compelling. Which is a problem.
Rex Steiner is the best of the bunch. But most of that comes from his innate Steiner-ness.
