www.dragonquest.jp/news/detail/3546/Happened a week ago but just now announced. He leaves a complicated legacy but you certainly can't deny the significance of his work. DQ12 being his last project will probably make that game feel very much like the end of an area.

He made some great, iconic music for one of the most popular video game series in Japanese history. But he was also a massive asshole who sued anyone who tried to use the games' music without his express permission and denied and downplayed the atrocities committed by Japan in World War II.
I mourn for the loss of artistic talent, but it's hard for me to mourn for the person himself.

Dragon Quest was the first JRPG I ever played, way back in like 1990 or 91. The music is one of the most iconic things about it and I love a great deal of the music from the series, and it means a lot to me. JRPGs are my favorite genre and DQ is one of the best of the genre.
That said, Sugiyama was a far-right nationalist and war crime denier.
f*** him.

Easily the best video game composer there ever was in my book and will be hard to top. Shame about everything else to do with him.

I don't like sticking my arms into controversial waters so much anymore (never did, but I used to be stubborn enough to do it anyway), so all I can add is, I had no idea he was 90.
I would have thought he was in his 60s or something.

I would have thought he was in his 60s or something. Honestly, his age explains some of his views better. A 60 yr old can say “My country did this,” with relative ease. A 90 yr old would have to say “WE did this,”, even if he would have been a child at the time. He also would have been a child who was awash in nationalistic propaganda. It’s not shocking to see guys his age that stuck to that mindset.

Nah, the difference between Sugiyama and many of his contemporaries when it comes to video game composers is that Sugiyama was already an accomplished commercial/classical composer and wanted to get into games because he thought most of them were garbage music wise. He was 55 when the first Dragon Quest came out. Sugiyama was a great composer but a shit person. He was also very clearly off his game the last 15 or so years as far as newer compositions for Dragon Quest.

So good.
DQXI's OST was trash, though.
