I’d say yes. Had the angle happened just years later, they would have for sure. Knowing that and how they use it as a crutch, it’s a relief they didn’t. If Vince would have put the tag titles on the Mega Powers, it would have been a good way to turn Hogan heel. Savage eats the pin( because we all know Hogan wouldn’t ), then Hogan blames Savage for the loss and turns on him, setting up the Wrestlemania V match only with the roles reversed. Even have Herman manage Hogan. LOL. Hogan was NEVER turning heel during that time period.

If the Mega Powers had won the titles, the issue is they then have to lose the titles. I suspect you do the same Miss Elizabeth/Savage beatdown bit, except this time Savage loses the belts during it, & blames Hogan for running off with his wife rather than help him.
The thing is though, the Mega Powers angle (still the best storyline in company history) didn't need the tag belts. Might as well use them to help get someone else over.

Thread begins and ends with Cryme Tyme. They earned a title shot that they never received, got fired when they were about to feud with the Champions, then lost both title programs they did get, against Legacy and JeriShow. Yet, they were always over, so I don't get it. I call it Jimmy Wang Yang syndrome. "They're really over, and the title they are going for has a depth problem right now... champion's kinda run out of steam." "Should we have the popular face who challenged for it once or twice win it?" "Suggest that again, and I will kill you where you stand. A heel needs this title for another 6 months." I remember the crowd cheering when it seemed he won the cruiserweight title in a gauntlet. Only to go quieter than a funeral when Chavo came out

As much as I love the Brain Busters, I kind of think the Twin Towers should have taken the belts from Demolition in 89. The Twin Towers would run into the problem of never needing the tag straps, also they were embroiled in a feud with the Mega Powers. That would have put 2 of the company's 3 titles in one feud, and after the feud with Hogan was done, they began the process of turning Boss Man face. Would have been great for them to win the tag titles, but I can understand why they never won them. Yeah, no way in hell was the company ever gonna turn Hogan heel at that point. Dude was such a bigger draw than anybody else, that turning him heel and getting rid of that cash cow would have been a top 5 stupidest move in wrestling history.

I understand that the company sometimes looked at the Cruiserweight title as a hassle of whatever reason, but there was zero actual reason they should have booked it this way. It isn't like getting rid of the belt made any of the other ones any more prestigious. It just meant even less of the undercard had anything to do.

It had a perfect spot to be used instead of a TV title. Have lots of title matches and lots of turnover to keep things exciting but not devalue a major title. Fast paced opening matches that get the crowd excited. People say it ghettoized smaller wrestlers but ones like Mysterio could always be elevated above the division.

Yeah, mysteriously, when Hornswoggle retired the belt, I missed out on all of those cruiserweights in higher programs that were supposed to materialize. I mean, Chavo got the ECW title, I guess, but that's more or less it.

The Killer Bees need to be in this conversation. Fabulous Rougeaus and Powers of Pain, also.

I know they weren't an actual set team but we're part of the Heenan Family. Studd and Bundy should have had a run with the tag belts.

Vince and Shane defeated HBK and God and still couldn't even get a match for the titles

Vince should have gave the Allied Powers a run with the championships if he had the ability of foresight.
The Riott Squad was over enough earlier this year to have the women’s belts in a weaker division.

I find it odd that no Nation of Domination combination ever held the belts. Especially considering how weak the tag team scene was around that period.

The Killer Bees need to be in this conversation. Fabulous Rougeaus and Powers of Pain, also. Killer Bees were the first team I thought of, for sure. In retrospect, they were basically the face tag jobbers, but it never felt like it back then and I think a lot of people would just assume they must have had at least a brief run as champs.

Vader and Mankind should've won the titles at Wrestlemania 13.
Not sure what happened there with the booking of the tag titles.
LOD vs. Vader and Mankind was the natural feud post Mania 13.

I think the Rockers (if you don’t count the title change that WWE erased from history) have to be high up the list. They were getting huge reactions through out their run and even in an era when the belts didn’t change hands as frequently (and you only had one set of titles) it is one of the more glaring missed opportunities they passed up.
Enzo and Cass were also getting thunderous reactions after their initial call up to the main roster, so they are a close second. I was there for the raw after mania when they debuted and it was a mega pop.

All this talk about Hogan never turning heel in 1989, and I have one question...WHO IS THIS "HERMAN" WHO'D BE MANAGING HIM?
I am now thinking of Pee-Wee in Hulk's corner, which may provide enough annoyance to turn fans on him.
Anyway, OT....Enzo and Cass should have been pushed and not split, let alone given the tag team titles. I don't know if that would save them from their personal issues, however.
And the 80s was FILLED with teams that could be mentioned. Rockers (officially, does WWE recognize the broken rope match now?), Killer Bees definitely, Rougeaus (another technicality, but imagine the heel version with the titles!), Can-Am Connection (which probably would have happened, I consider Strike Force to be the Can-Am push), the Islanders...
It would have caused a lot of eye-rolling, but I am shocked the Bushwhackers never got a goodwill tag title reign.
Studd and Bundy would have been interesting...but who would you see beating them short of a team with Hogan in it?
I am now thinking of the Apter mags of the time pushing for Intercontinental Tag Team Titles because of this. (which would totally work for, say, the Rockers. Make that the workrate title like the singles version)
New Generation-wise, it's a minor surprise that Owen and Anvil didn't...though Anvil was more of an antagonist with Owen as he got his singles push.

Now, IF there was an I-C tag title...how would it reshape how the TT division in the late 80s turned out? I'd wonder if the Brain Busters would be pushed in the secondary division instead of the World one, for instance.
