Hey gang, working on something at the moment and was wondering - on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day where you grew up or today, what are some stores or restaurants or other places that are/were open?
Anyone have any interesting traditions or situations where they needed to get something in a pinch?

For the past few years we’ve been either dining in or getting takeout from Pho 1 in Waltham. Here is their website: www.google.com/amp/s/www.pho1walthamma.com/The name is a little misleading as it’s not strictly a pho place. They’re really known for their double fried chicken, which we always get. As for places that were open where I grew up I really couldn’t tell you. Especially when I was little it seemed like we never went anywhere on Christmas. We’d just stay in having Christmas food throughout the day and enjoy our presents.

Over the past couple of years the Christmas Day trip to the movie theater has become kinda a tradition for me. Didn't go last year obviously though.

My Kitchen is always open on Christmas I make a peking duck with fresh green onion mandarin pancakes every year and any of my friends that needs a place to not be alone is welcome.

A few Chinese restaurants and movie theaters at least. Part of my family's Christmas activities include driving around the area and seeing what else is open in between a movie and dinner.
Last year was obviously an exception because of the pandemic and we streamed Wonder Woman 1984 and brought in Chinese take-out instead, but we might go out this year as we're all vaccinated. Depends on the movies playing.

There are more places open now than when I was a kid. I actually lament the fact that places open on Christmas as it would be nice for one day for a lot more people to have a day off. When I was younger, if you didn’t have a certain thing in the house on Christmas Eve, then you would go without. There were a few shops open, these were quite often what we would call a “corner shop” (and various other less Politically correct names). The UK has a large population of Asian people who would quite often run these shops and due to their religion, they didn’t have any need to take Christmas off, so their shops were a godsend if you needed anything essential to get you through. Thankfully cinemas are closed. We used to get Americans moaning that we weren’t open on Christmas Day as they wanted to watch a film, we’d normally reply with “we’re open literally every other day in the year, allow us one day to be closed! Some Pubs are open for a couple of hours. We used to have a tradition of going down the pub on Christmas Day around noon, after we’d opened the presents and before dinner was ready. But as I got older and couldn’t quickly rebound from drinking for a couple of hours on an empty stomach, I stopped doing that.
The one major difference I noticed when I lived in the US about how they do it different to the UK, is that the day after Christmas, everything mostly goes back to normal (this could be down to the Christmas season being longer in the lead-up with Thanksgiving too). Whereas in the UK, it’s the start of a week off work (if you’re lucky) to spend drinking, eating leftovers and chocolate. And due to Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling on a Saturday and Sunday this year, that’s two extra days off!

The Circle K is open. I think that’s about it.

I'm from a small town so pretty much besides gas stations, nothing was open on Christmas day.

Chinese and Indian restaurants, convenience stores (usually Indian owned) and the pubs would open for 2-3 hours in the afternoon for regulars only.
