Not the most covered ever, but The Cure's "Love Song" gets covered quite often, also.

According to the Guinness Book Of Records, "Yesterday" by the Beatles has the most cover versions of any song ever written. There are over 3000 covers of the song, though that's an alleged number.

I don't believe that, even if that's what the record book says, because it doesn't make sense. Yesterday would be too hard for a lot of newly formed garage bands. The standards are things like Louie Louie and Wild Thing, because those songs are the easiest to play.

I am pretty sure any record for most covers is released versions.....there's no way to to account for every song every asshole who ever picked up a guitar and a microphone may have sung. It's Yesterday by the Beatles...it was just in the paper the other day in a "Did You Know?" section....Though 3000 seems high.....

I see, I see. I have no reason to dispute "Yesterday" having the most recorded cover versions. I wouldn't even have had a guess for it, unless you count folk songs like "Turkey in the Straw" or "Will the circle be unbroken".

I bet "Happy Birthday" is covered more then the Star Spangled Banner. ;D Some motherf***er owns the song Happy Birthday, which is why you almost never hear it on TV...because you gotta pay an assload of cash to sing it......

I bet Christmas tunes are pretty high on the list. After all, how many folks have covered Silent Night, The First Noel, Deck the Halls, etc. Even if you only count officially released albums, the number's gotta be significant.

That's a pretty good reason to disbelieve the Guiness book of records. I mean c'mon, simple logic will tell you that there are a lot more recorded versions of those Christmas songs than "Yesterday".

I thought noone had to pay to use Happy Birthday because it's in the public domain. Same as Christmas carols.

Maybe they mean covers of songs that require a royalty to be paid. Because traditional or folk songs would be in the hundreds of thousands if not.

I thought noone had to pay to use Happy Birthday because it's in the public domain. Same as Christmas carols. Actually, the copyright for "Happy Birthday" is one of the most fiercely protected in the world. Watch a TV show or movie where someone's birthday is celebrated. It's rarely sung, or it's modified in some way. And the royalties are huge. Science fact. Here's the whole tale: www.snopes.com/music/songs/birthday.aspNot an actual song, but they figure the drum track from James Brown's "Funky Drummer" has been sampled on over 700 songs.

How about The Loco-Motion? That isn't only covered every 10-15 years, it charts every 10-15 years.

By the way, The Tea Party's version of Paint it Black is the best cover ever. Go and get it right now! The cover of it by the band Incubus Succubus (not to be confused with the more well-known band Incubus) is better, IMHO. One of the best covers ever. Was going to say Cure's LoveSong, but someone beat me to the punch, so I'll go with Kim Wilde's "Kids in America." Maybe not the MOST-covered song, but I have at least 8 or 9 different bands covering it in my collection.

I remember hearing that "Yesterday" was the most covered non-public domain song quite awhile ago.
Not sure if it's changed in the years since.
