It was recently brought to my attention that revenge is a dish best eaten cold is not actually a Chinese proverb but in reality a line from a French novel. Makes me wonder what other well known facts I have got all wrong.
Can anyone else think of any other similar examples?

MARIE-ANTOINETTE NEVER SAID LET THEM EAT CAKE.
There was a story floating about of Marie-Therese of Spain who married Louis XIV that's similar, and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau included it in his work "Confessions" in 1766 - when Marie-Antoinette was only 10, and still years away from becoming queen.

Famous British one (and mods, please remove if not OK)
Dennis Skinner: Half the house opposite are crooks. Speaker: Please withdraw that statement. Dennis Skinner: OK, half the house opposite aren't crooks.
This exchange never actually took place and has existed in many variations over the years, first appearing in 1927 in a Swedish newspaper.

When asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, Lennon replied “Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles”. Except he didn’t. It was for many years credited to Jasper Carrott but then it was discovered it was actually first said by Phil Pope, a British comedian who has written many comedy songs for years and wrote a load of stuff for Spitting Image, most famously The Chicken Song. He appeared in an episode of Only Fools and Horses as Tony Angelino, the singing dustman who could only sing very specific songs.

Caesar did not say "Et tu, Brute?". Reliable sources told me his exact words were: "Not ye olde stabby stab!"

Honestly, the Get Back documentary essentially dismantles the entire idea of that being something Lennon would say given that it both demonstrates how damn good Ringo was as a drummer, and that he was probably the one Beatle the other three would be the least likely to ever publicly insult given how well he got long with everyone.

Well, I haven't seen it yet, but Penn Jillette said that Paul and Ringo both came off as looking amazing, whereas John and George less so. Then said, should he happen to outlive Teller and someone makes a documentary on them, he's gonna make Teller look the fool too, plus he has the added bonus of no one really knowing what Teller sounds like, so he can voiceover what he wants.

I understand what the unspoken statement is there, but Ringo was always close to all three of them. Obviously, we know he and Paul are still close to this day. With George, even after he slept with Ringo's then-wife, they remained close friends until George passed away. John also maintained a friendship with Ringo no matter their physical distance, actively caring about and supporting Ringo's solo works after the band ended. Unlike the mis-quote, he'd gone on record saying wonderful things about Ringo, both as a drummer and as a person. This isn't even bearing in mind that Ringo played on solo works by all three, post-Beatles; George especially so. They, in particular, seemed to have a lovely relationship as musicians. I think that while the other three may have had varying levels of acrimony with each other throughout the years, they all always loved Ringo. They may not have agreed on much anymore, but it seemed they all agreed that Ringo was the one bandmate they consistently cared about, thought highly of, and kept in their lives. I didn't mean to get all tangent-y or anything, I just feel like some people have this weird view of Ringo and what the others thought of him as a bandmate and friend. There's so much out there, spanning decades, that shows how they really felt. Maybe it's a running gag for some people, I don't know.

Teller has done interviews and he's spoken during some of Penn and Teller's acts.
