It is likely a constellation of all these factors & others that contributed to the massive detour away from the Black & Gold. Is it ALL of them? Which is the biggest one?
I feel there's ONE that is larger than all the other ones.
In many threads in the past like the Karrion Kross thread, it's frequently cited that this is a spiteful move by Vince to get back at Triple H for losing the Wednesday Night Wars. While I believe this may have something to do with it, there could be another reason I feel for this NXT 2.0 change.
I listen to the exact words of Nick Khan in his interviews, and he was talking about "Age" and "The Future", and building towards the future of the company. You watch WWE Raw & Smackdown and there's been times where almost everyone is over 40 years old or close to it, like that the one RAW that had "Owens vs Balor"/"Ziggler/Roode vs Omos/Styles"/"Lashley vs Mysterio" in linear succession, which leaves very little for the future of the company, and Vince McMahon thought that the NXT Super-Indie approach will never bring a Austin/Rock/Cena/Reigns successor to be a stalwart for decades because there doesn't seem to be one now AND the show has ample 40+ year olds in consecutive Main Roster matches, who are relatively smallish who Vince doesn't favor as much either. Maybe Vince was not happy about that. As a former TV executive that Nick Khan is, he probably is very youth-obsessed in this culture. For example, Madonna can sell albums in her 60's because she was a big deal before, but if she started in her 60's, nobody would give a damn.
If somebody is in a regular occupation or a trade, Age is highly coveted & a massive asset, but in entertainment & culture where fame/notoriety is sought, I'm not sure that age is exalted to the same heights, especially when wrestling is mixed with athletics where age is not favorable in athletics either.
If this was solely an AGE thing with Nick Khan & WWE as I was thinking, then what is baffling to me is why fire all the Triple H guys & trainers, who don't have an on-air role...who's the new trainers/coaches?
I truly ENJOY NXT 2.0 a lot compared to the NXT product in 2020-early 2021 when it precipitously declined from it's peak in 2017-2018, but there's no mistake that there has been a large sea-change taking over. WWE could have done both and keep Karrion Kross & Keith Lee, but they made their choices.

If it was just the change of direction I could see a few reasons but with the release of ALL of HHH's guys including Regal and Samoa Joe who was specifically rehired by HHH to do work in NXT especially behind the scenes.
it's gotta be pettiness that NXT Didn't kill AEW.

“Your way wasn’t working, so now we’re doing your thing my way”
The issue is that so little of NXT’s issues were with NXT itself. People weren’t watching Dynamite over NXT because they were sick of NXT, it’s because they ARE sick of RAW and SmackDown, including what happens to most of the former NXT people once they get there. NXT is collateral damage in that regard.

Probably an amalgam of those and other reasons. I think at the core of it was the “lack of success” of a lot of NXT call ups. Vince never “got” NXT, it’s stars, their connection with the fans. From what we know of Vince though it’s very unlikely he’d concede he was the issue. And I buy that Vince’s inner circle put the blame on NXT’s direction, HHH’s vision, the “Indy stars” etc etc.

Basically “Look at our massive TV deals, we must be doing something right”, right? I’ve said this all along, the only time you’ll see the kind of change you want to see in WWE is if they start ACTIVELY LOSING money, because that’s the only thing that’s ever mattered to them ever since they went on the New York Stock Exchange.

Vince was already battling with Triple H throughout the years simply because NXT was hotter than the main roster was. Once AEW was announced, Vince wanted to throw NXT in there to do battle while changing things which didn't work because, well, there was no way NXT could win given it just doesn't work like that. Then Vince decided to stop bullshitting with Triple H and started firing his people like he, Dunn and his other goons been wanting to do for years. This time they didn't have the excuse of "NXT is the hottest thing ever" to fall back on and with that came Vince and his people taking over NXT and changing it because they feel "Triple H and his people failed" when the reality is no, yall put them in a bad position and now you're even more upset. Sadly, Trips and co didn't have a "well we keep making amazing talent in NXT and look at our storylines" angle anymore because Vince kept f***ing the brand and people up. It was a slow execution of everything Trips and his people had been doing over the years. Just a slow process that started because of the whole "hey is Triple H gonna take over" "nah" "why not?" "because I'm f***ing Vince get the f*** outta my face Paul you're not getting my company" thing that's been going on for like a decade. That's one thing I'm seeing people miss. Vince and his people have been battling Trips and his people behind the scenes for years. Only once AEW came into play did Vince decide to ramp things up, take over NXT and cut them (Trips and his people) off at the knees. He's ruthless.

The fact they're cutting so many Triple H behind the scenes hires stinks of them punishing Trips.

I think it was a combination of things:
WWE was stupid and arrogant enough to think that their C-show would automatically beat AEW because, it was a WWE thing. Vince hates to lose, but he never wants to admit that HE and the people around him might be the issue. He always has to find someone else to blame.
Supposedly Hunter does not get along with some of Vince’s cronies. So they probably got into Vince’s ear and undermined Triple H at a time when Vince was already in that mood.
The last half of 2021 was basically WWE going back to the “same old crap” across the board.
Etc.

Vince still brings up Ted Turner in shareholder meetings and shit, he's never gotten over the Monday Night War so I would not be at all surprised if the idea of one of his products losing to a Turner network made him absurdly furious.
