Hello to all my lovies!!!
Happy 2022!! I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year celebration. I really hope everyone here has an amazing 2022!
I have a question about Ahmed Johnson.
So, as you guys may know, I came into the WWF shortly after Royal Rumble 1998. My boyfriend at the time (who looked like a cross between young Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and was ironically a fan of Stone Cold) introduced me to it shortly after we began officially dating. We watched an episode of Raw sometime in late January and I had zero idea WTF was going on. He had recorded the 1998 Royal Rumble on a VHS (do some of you even remember VHS? LOL. I feel so old), and he invited me over one Friday night (it was after his basketball game) to watch it. At first, I was kinda nervous, you know, thinking he might try something, but he was cool, explaining everything to me and pointing out who was who and who they did not get along with and who they were aligned with.
I thought after Stone Cold, the next breakout star would have been Ahmed Johnson from watching some of the 1997 VHS tapes that my bf at the time had (which we saw a bit before the 1998 RR to get me caught up), but at the 1998 Royal Rumble, he looked absolutely gassed out and his give a f*** meter looked like it was on E. I remember at one point Ahmed was eliminated from the Rumble and was walking up the entrance ramp and someone pushed him and he didn't even react. He just kinda kept walking.
Now, the reason I point Ahmed out specifically, is because looking back at some of his matches, the man had some talent. Now, I'm not saying he should have been the face of the company, but I think he should have had at least two or three runs with the title, particularly in the beginning of 2000 when Austin and The Undertaker were out for surgery. He had the look, the physique, but his mic skills were trash. I'm absolutely sure, however, that his mic skills could have been developed further.
I point out his feud with Goldust in particular to be the zenith of his career. I think this was somewhere in 1997-ish, please correct me if I'm wrong, but Goldust had a penchant for singling out some of the guys, going on sexually charged diatribes about them that were laden with innuendo, and stalking them. The gimmick is actually really offensive now, but at the time, it was more or less bizarre to say the least.
At one point, Goldust was going after Razor Ramon, then at one point it was Savio Vega (which I remember Savio randomly spanking Goldust at one point during their "feud"? It's been almost three decades since I've seen this) and then Goldust set his sights on Ahmed. I think Ahmed was chowing down on a vegetable platter and he was eating too fast and choked on something. Goldust brought him back to life by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. However, Ahmed felt more tongue than air during this and immediately set his sights on Goldust. I think their match was for the IC title, IIRC.
I also remember late one evening back in 2011/2012-ish, I heard a shoot interview from Ahmed where he dogged Dwayne Johnson out. He claimed that Shawn Michaels and Triple H were in the locker room making offensive jokes about a certain demographic of people and Ahmed was on the other side of the lockers, listening in. When they saw Dwayne had came out of the shower and obviously overheard everything. When they apologized profusely about it, Dwayne said that he was not part of the demographic and told them not to "worry about it". Ahmed (aka Tony Norris) came from behind the lockers and confronted Dwayne about it, to which Dwayne really didn't have an answer. Ahmed even stated that Dwayne was jealous of him because of the "Johnson" last name. I just want to know where their beef came from. I don't know if anyone will ever have the answer to that.
I don't know. I wish that Ahmed at least leaped from mid-card status to having a few runs with the WWF Heavyweight Championship. It was cute that he got the IC title and everything, but given his talent in the ring when he CARED, I would have tried to push him much further if I were a writer/booker or whatever.
Happy 2022!! I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year celebration. I really hope everyone here has an amazing 2022!
