Yeah, Vince was offended. Vince McMahon, of all people, was aghast. That's not good. I think JR was probably relieved whenever Watts was gone and he didn't have to be the go-between anymore. I've never heard someone who both reveres yet seemingly detests someone like JR feels about Watts. It's like Stockholm syndrome, almost. anyway, Ahmed Johnson was my 2nd favorite wrestler when I was a kid. Undertaker was #1, Ahmed was #2. I think I just liked the Pearl River Plunge. And, in my own weird "it's still real!" kid mind, he came off like he wasn't playing around and was hurting these dastardly heels. Turns out... it's because he was. That tends to be a no-no in the wrestling business. Couple that with a bad attitude and being as prone to hurting yourself as you are someone else? You're gonna get a short shelf life. It's wild that Ahmed was so messy in the ring. I did think his planchas looked decent for a guy his size. I never knew any of this backstage drama was happening around him and he was legit injuring people and hurting himself. No wonder he was looking sluggish at the '98 Rumble. The first actual live PPV I saw was No Way Out of Texas, and I don't remember him being there. LOL. Was he gone by that point?

That Nation feud went on forever and ever and was compounded by the strange part where Ahmed actually joined. What's worse, he got injured not long after. I don't think he lasted much longer after that PPV, if at all. He was gone before Wrestlemania. It may be a case like Survivor Series 88 where Patera and the Bulldogs were done right after that PPV. They probably saved Ahmed for a spot that needed filling, he made sense for the match and then he quit or they let him go.

The following night at the Raw taping they wanted him to job to Kurrgan and the claw hold. Ahmed refused and left the arena and that was the end of him in the company. According to Ahmed in a shoot interview years ago he claims that his sister was gravely ill around the time and had very little time to live. He says he refused to lose to Kurrgan because his sister watched all the WWF shows on TV and didn't want her last sight of him to be being destroyed. Personally I think he was lying and it was just simply he didn't want to lose and was offended and decided to take his ball and go home. Howver that's what he claims for whatever it's worth.

Yeah, that's total BS. And it's not like he wasn't looking like shit prior to that match, anyway.

Although he was around before I got into it, I look at this guy and wonder if I should check out more 1995-1997 stuff with him involved to see what was up. I know that the promos he did for the War Zone game became a meme as far back as the mid-2000s when they surfaced on YouTube (before we knew what memes were, when all we had were YTMND and Ebaum's World).
However, after I got into wrestling, I wondered about this guy after seeing him in War Zone and action figures for sale after he was gone (man, Jakks was often behind on their toys, weren't they?). I saw his birthdate and it said that he was born in 1970s, which he was supposedly in his mid-twenties when he was in the WWF. I looked at his pictures and found that hard to believe. I know in this day and age that people can age well, and some age poorly, but I see a picture from 1995 or 1996, and I am like "no way is he 25." I then found out his real age and then it made sense. It's funny, because Michael Hayes came in around that time as Dok Hendrix and was 35, but looked older.

I can't believe he did that and tried to get away with it. LOL. If he were in fact 25, maaaaan, he's had a hard life. It reminds me of those 80s teen horror movies where they would cast people pushing their mid 30s as "teenagers". LOL. Oh, Ahmed, why did you throw it all away?

As a kid I was a fan based on his look and sheet intensity
He looked like he was MURDERING his opponents and then it turned out he pretty much was. Does anybody have that GIF of him throwing some random suit through a table?
This post also reminded me of that short bit where Ahmed was being taken away on a stretcher, then a "helpful" Goldust ran up to give him mouth to mouth resuscitation

Best I could find in a quick search: But yeah, that's exactly how I remember Ahmed too. He looked like he was murdering his opponents, and then it turned out he pretty much was.

Ahmed seemed like he was being positioned as a main eventer in 1996. Right before Ron Simmons hurt him in 96, he was IC champion and won a battle royal to be the #1 contender for the WWF title. He obviously wasn't going to beat Shawn in 96, but had he stayed healthy, I could have easily seen him win the title at some point. Some revisionist history with Ahmed because we know now that he was reckless in the ring. At the time he was very over.

He very much reminds me of Ken Kennedy - a charismatic worker the office was high on initially, but they soured on him after sloppiness in the ring & injuries which derailed their momentum.

His tendency to injure himself and others, awfully bad promos and never really getting over spelled the end of time. He was injury prone and very dangerous in the ring, but he was f***ing over, man. He was crazy over.

I just watched the 1996 KOTR match with Goldust and everything Ahmed does for offense is just so sloppy with no skill whatsoever. It looks like someone just who never wrestled before and was briefed before the match a few moves.
The crazy amount of leg padding's intrigues me. I remember in his house show or dark match look he had long tights with flames, I think that should have been a look he kept and the pads wouldn't have looked so weird but you can't put those thick pads under long tights. Was it someone in managements idea for the pads knowing he'd get hurt the way he wrestled?
Also, I feel bad for those door opener guys, I doubt they knew Ahmed would blow right past them.

He definitely should've kept the flame tights. It was a much better look. Definitely better then the 25 leg pads and trunks that were like four sizes too small for him and would ride up his ass crack every match. I guess maybe they thought the flame tights were too similar to Harlem Heat. Ahmed was friends with them as they were all from Houston and had the same trainers so it wouldn't surprise me if they went to the same person to have gear made.

Ahmed Johnson would have been a megastar had he gotten into wrestling at a younger age, bot older, post football couldn't handle the wear and tear and was still green to boot when his chance came. Say what you will about him, the man had IT, but the IT factor doesn't mean much if you're hurt most of the time.

If Ahmed could have brought that kind of intensity but just, you know, known what he was doing in-ring, I think he'd have been somebody. Ahmed had that Sid-level of intangible charisma where he just looks and comes off like a badass.

Does anyone happen to have a pic of him in the "flame" tights? Asking for a friend. LOL

LOL I don't know how to post pictures but if you google "Ahmed Johnson 1995 WWF Debut" on google images there's a picture a bit of the way down. I think the only main pictures that exist are from the WWF Magazine that did a one page feature on him. I don't know what issue. There might be two actually though one you can just see the very top of the tights. The other you see a pic with the top but also full tights with him versus Skip.
