I wouldn't put "NXT 1.0" into one monolithic umbrella because there were so many phases of that era that were really distinct. (Gameshow, Redemption, Balor, DIY, 2 hour era)
It is rather accepted axiomatically that 2017-2019 was the zenith of the show, which was my fav.
Some people are hating on the very good new NXT rainbow 2.0 because it's not up to the Black & Gold. If 2018 NXT is the reference point people are using, then yes, I do believe that is correct.
I would take NXT 2.0 ANY DAY over the NXT era around 2020-early 2021, unquestionably.
Guys like Tony D'Angelo are it. Enormous fan. Grayson Waller went from "WTF are you" as a milquetoast face with no reason to cheer, to a near (but not quite) MJF level heel. I didn't care for how Harland was introduced to everybody (not setting the tone), but now I can hardly wait to see how he progresses in the roster with match quality & character & placement in the card. I'm marking out at Von Wagner beating the hell out of fans. Enjoying the return of characters & vignettes (Duke Hudson). And way more than this.
NXT 2.0 of course is not the level of the idyllic DIY/Black/Andrade era.....but a huge bump up from the prior era to me (2020-Sept 2021)
My favorite show of the week from WWE.
