The question is, if Cena became mega heel, who would have been the faces that would have put over during the heel turn? And how badly would they have f***ed that part of the booking up. Let's look at our timeframe here (2012). This is still before they really completely shifted away from strong babyfaces towards dominant heels/underdog faces as their primary philosophy, but this hypothetical Cena turn could have expediated that process. Undertaker and Triple H have just gone part-time, so they're out (although Triple H isn't so far gone yet that he wouldn't put his hand up for a PPV feud). Punk and Sheamus are the world champions, yet they're not completely all-in on Punk as we all know. But they are on Sheamus. Babyface Sheamus in 2012 is possibly the strongest single-year push any one person has ever had in terms of sheer TV presence (this is "RAW SuperShow" time so he's all over both RAW AND SmackDown), accolades (he wins the Rumble, wins the world title at WrestleMania and holds onto it and defends it until deep into the year), amount of TV matches and number of TV matches won. His record for the year is 77-19-2. Most people don't even HAVE 77 TV matches in a year, let alone WIN that many. Even Roman Reigns's strongest year in a non-split setting (2015) has less wins and more non-finishes and only slightly fewer losses (72-16-5). So to answer your question, they'd probably be putting their chips behind Sheamus at this point. Also, Ryback has his return repackaging and gets the whopper winning streak from there, so he could be in that mix, as well.
