Raphael is my favorite because he's a super hero with mental health issues.

Raphael's my favorite. I do wish that more of the films and shows moved away from trying to repeat the 1990 approach of having him angry and butting heads with Leonardo (I would assume that's a carryover from Mirage, just since they used so many setpieces from that in the film.) The story's been told.
I loved that IDW had Leo and Donatello be the two that had conflict, with Leonardo being the more faithful one, and Donatello given to being cynical or a bit condescending. It felt fresh, and it made sense. Of course the guy who "does machines" might have a bit of an ego sometimes, or get frustrated.
Speaking of, I also liked that they explored Michelangelo's hidden depths a little, like having him take a break away from the team when he felt they had crossed an ethical line he refused to follow them on. I think being fun-loving and silly doesn't necessarily have to mean "stupid", and that's unfortunately sometimes how he seems to be portrayed. I mean, if nothing else, he'd kind of interesting to see presented as the prodigy of the four, in a way: nunchaku are harder to use effectively than the weapons the others have, and he's got two of them. I'd love to see a show, movie, etc, run with that.
I guess since I've discussed the others, I should talk about Leo. He's really easy to make boring, like the same kind of insults people lay at Cyclops' feet. I think the best Leonardo depictions tend to be the ones where we see the stresses of being leader get to him. I am not saying he should act like a martyr all the time or anything, which is also an easy mistake for TMNT media to make, but he isn't Splinter, and being the dutiful son should sometimes be difficult, especially if he's put into a position where he would be in disagreement with how Splinter would see an issue. He should be allowed to grow out of that shadow a bit.
This concludes, "I've been a TMNT fan for like 30 years and have a lot of thoughts about that."

Raphael is a capable Ninja Turtle, but a disgrace of a Hero Turtle.

Actually, may as well ask here: there have been a lot of shows, comics, etc, and I have not seen them all, as I'd venture most TMNT fans haven't. Does anyone know if they've ever addressed the topic of age?
By which I mean, they're the TEENAGE Mutant Ninja Turtles, of course. Splinter, in continuities where he isn't Hamato Yoshi transformed into a rat, is depicted as being in advanced age. Sometimes practically ancient, but usually at least in his older years.
Thing is, he is usually shown as being mutated at around the same time as the turtles, often the exact same time. Yet, he is much more aged than them. Rats live to be around two years, usually, three if they're fortunate, at least the sort of rat he likely is. He has already far outlived any example of his original species, and most rodents, though some types of squirrels, porcupines, etc, can live over twenty years.
Turtles are famed for their longevity. Some tortoises can live well over 150 years, but obviously, the TMNT are generally presented as pond sliders, which are popular in the pet trade. These live from 30-50 years on average.
What I'm getting at is... if the effect the mutagen had on Splinter's lifespan is also reflective of the effect it had on them, they could live a really, really long time. If that's the case, it definitely further adds gravity to Splinter's determination to pass on his wisdom to his sons, and to unify them.

I think Leonardo's the superior character. For the sole reason that out of the four, the guy he's named after is the most famous one.
After all, Leonardo DiCaprio was in Titanic.
