In NXT you have a poker player, a fake professor, an sjw, a Von Wagner, a chronic sleeper, an Italian, and a host of one sided gimmicks. This is exactly what the New Generation era looked like. One sided gimmicks which ultimately go nowhere (plumber, hockey reject, and so on). And WWE is surprised fans haven’t taken a shine to the “New Generation” of NXT.

I definitely see the similarities. Although I will say, I loved the New Generation as it was happening.
Characters like that, at least when done right, jump out at me and grab my attention. Like I’d rather see mobster Tony D’Angelo with his gimmick against crypto-rich Cameron Grimes than a clinic between Bobby Fish and Danny Burch. The problem becomes when the gimmicks aren’t done right, such as poker player Duke Hudson, or teacher André Chase.

New Generation had better talent and on most occasions a few great matches. 2.0 has a good match here and there, but being developmental again, a lot of sloppy stuff too.

I loved the New Generation era. It was the era I grew up watching. All the gimmicks and wacky characters was what caught my interest and made me a fan of wrestling.
I can appreciate a 5 star rasslin match with two generic looking guys in black trunks... But I'd take Papa Shango vs The Big Bossman any day over it.
I watch UFC so if I want to see regular guys, I'd just watch that. I watch wrestling for the circus like feel, goofy vignettes and all that good stuff it brings. That's what seperates it from real sports like MMA and Boxing.
I feel like a lot of wrestlers these days forget that aspect of the business. They want to be seen as "tough guys" with their MMA movesets, plain black trunks and worked shoot promos. If more wrestlers had the creativity the likes of Bray Wyatt has for example, the business would be better off for it.
As someone who's trained in the business and been around it backstage, the idea of being "John Smith, pro wrestler" never appealed to me. When I started training, I wanted to be a gimmick. I wanted to do wacky "Coming Soon" promos, have a colorful unique attire and a stupid name for my finishing move. Wins/Losses and Title Belts never mattered. It was all about being memorable and standing out for me.

It’s the New Generation, but without nearly as much good wrestling as even then.

In 1991 there was a prison guard, a funeral place guy, a model, a matador, a millionaire, a guy worked for the IRS, a mountie, a guy who repossessed things, a guy who ate alligators. This is Vince going back to what he understands.

Definitely.
And the connection isn't so much Vince, as much as it is Bruce.
I love Bruce, he's an arse kissing yes man, but he knows he is, and everyone who listens to his podcast knows he knows he is.
He's also the guy who loves a random gimmick. I do not think it's a coincidence we see this happen when he got booking control. Now, obviously everything he does comes from Vince really, but I definitely see some of the Brucie box of gimmicks in NXT 2.0
And I love it.
It's so much fun, so corny, totally not serious and just what I want from my pro wrestling in a totally ironic and makes me laugh when work is shit way.

There's a few gimmicks in NXT right now that are great in my opinion Tony D'Angelo, Wendy Choo, Tiffany Stratton are all clever gimmicks that are being portrayed well. But then you have the likes of Joe Gacy... This gimmick doesn't suit wrestling. I get what they're going for but it just falls on deaf ears with the audience. There's nothing you can do with that. It would've probably been better if they ran vignettes for Harland and Gacy was his twisted therapist who then acted as his manager or something. Duke Hudson is another one... I mean, what do you do with a poker player gimmick besides like, ONE segment where he plays poker? He can't do that every week with a guy he's feuding with. As for Grayson Waller... I don't even know what that guy is supposed to be.

Duke Hudson does nothing for me, and the poker gimmick is dead already. Waller is just a prick. His gimmick is literally just being a prick. And he is getting that over and it's working.
