In terms of shock value John Cena returning in 2008 has to be up there.
I don’t know who gets it for me. I wish I could say Mr. Perfect in 2002, but him, Goldust, Godfather, and Val Venis were all hyped heavily in the weeks leading up to it. Although it was a surprise how well he was booked to look in that match.

Haku as he had just been in WCW (maybe seen the week before?) and thusly I didn't see it coming.

Nash coming out as Diesel was a childhood dream come true. The reaction he got was incredible.

Does Bret Hart in 1994 count? The time they pulled a swerve when nobody came out somewhere in the 20s and then he came limping out two numbers later selling his leg injury caused by his brother Owen a couple hours ago. The lame excuse for the earlier no-show was Bastion Booger getting a stomachache from eating too much and withdrawing from the Rumble.

In terms of impact and "oh shit, I did NOT see that coming", I'd say Cena in 2008. I don't remember any kind of indication he'd be there

AJ Styles making his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble was pretty insane.

AJ Styles making his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble was pretty insane. Pretty much. Like, even going back to it every so often, there’s not much you can compare to it. You not only debut this guy, the guy everyone expected to be at the crowd at NXT Takeover, at the Rumble and in the Rumble match (a Rumble match for the WWE Championship), you debut him to face Roman Reigns?! It’s honestly hard to beat.

The top 3 are Edge, AJ Styles and John Cena. A dark horse 4th candidate is Chris Jericho showing up to be #2 in 2013 after there being no inclination he was coming back. People lost their minds.

The thing that slightly knocks Edge was the spear he did on Elias at SummerSlam which, whilst it was awesome, basically said to me he would be back at some point in the future so even before the leaks came out, it would have been weird if he wasn’t.
But that’s a minor gripe and it’s my Number 2. Cena gets 3 because I really remember checking WWE.com the next day and going “Please not HHH, please PLEASE not HHH” and was both happy it wasn’t him and being confused about how.

I’d say no because it was obvious Bret was going to be there somehow. They’d spent years building him up as a guy who competes regardless of how injured he was, so they basically telegraphed that he’d be limping down the aisle at some point despite having his leg kicked out of his leg. I’m going to go with Kharma. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. Michael Cole sold it perfectly too.

I came here to say Cena. Not just because of the shock of him being there, but because the shock actually made the crowd pop huge for all of three seconds before they remembered they were supposed to hate him and then started booing.
AJ is another one though. I remember there being rumours he might be there, but it was still a huge shock when he walked out with his own name, against Roman, and was treated as a big deal straight away.

AJ is another one though. I remember there being rumours he might be there, but it was still a huge shock when he walked out with his own name, against Roman, and was treated as a big deal straight away. To put some extra context to this, his last indie appearence was losing the Rev Pro British Heavyweight title to Zack Sabre Jr and in his post match promo, he teased being in the Rumble match. Me, being a fool, laughed it off and expected him to be appearing on NXT after the Rumble and facing whatever dude they had down there that was supposed to be “The AJ Styles we have at home” ala Owens/Bill Dempsey. It was also the time when everyone and their mother teased a Rumble appearence and Shelton Benjamin was rumored every year so…

Bob Backlund in 2000 just for JR's reaction.
"What the hell is Bob Backlund doing here?"
