Inspired by SNESDrunk's "Unconventional Ways to Play Classic Super Nintendo Games" videos. (You should definitely check SNESDrunk out). Finding alternate ways of playing a game, whether by doing a self-imposed challenge, or just playing a game differently than it was intended, are a good way of spicing up games you've played hundreds of times. I'll start with the 30 Melon Challenge in Yoshi's Story, where you try to get all of the 30 Melons in each level, and NO OTHER FRUIT. It's basically like Hard Mode for the game. Particular Mushroom has a video that goes into more detail. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9enXcWdVqus

Try to beat every NES Punch Out fighter in the 3rd round. Not before. Get the KO in Round 3.
The ones you have to dodge a lot are the hardest (Bald Bull and Super Macho Man definitely.)

I play WWE 2k as a fantasy booking sim, but keep it realistic.
All of WWE history happened until around October 2021, then it skews off into my parallel but as realistic as possible world. I keep an actual "book" and stuff.
Then when I play I have to play as the person who is booked to win and win the match.

' had a lot of good time playing Fallout: New Vegas using the console commands and walking thru walls - lots of things that I'd not see or could do - otherwise.

Not sure if it counts, but whenever I play Goldeneye I have a tendency to go through the levels while failing all the objectives on purpose. Destroying things you need to collect, killing characters you need to spare (Scientists, Natalya, etc), stuff like that.

Is it possible to beat the original Doom with just a pistol?

Once I get everything I need to up to snuff, I plan on replaying through FFXIV's main scenario via New Game Plus as the "canon" job for each expansion: Warrior in A Realm Reborn, Dragoon in Heavensward, Monk in the Ala Mhigan parts of Stormblood, Samurai in the Othardian parts of Stormblood, Dark Knight in Shadowbringers, and Paladin in Endwalker.

Wasteland can be played using only melee weapons. You get double experience for beating something to death instaed of shooting it. Leave the pistols and rifles and antitank weapons and assault rifles behind. Play all the way through with crowbars and clubs and chainsaw and proton axes.

Beating Ocarina of Time without using Sword/Shield (except when it was 100% necessary to advance). Used tons of sticks, bombs, bow/slingshot, hammer and Biggoron. You quickly become a dodgemaster.

This is why I love the junction system in FFVIII—I can mix it up, every time. I like giving my characters "jobs". For example, to make Zell a monk, just junction the GFs with str-j to him, stock some cure and cura and you're good to go.

You can play the game Battletoads for the NES, and actually beat it sometime instead of getting stuck on level three and just angrily quitting and cursing your mother for bringing you into this world.

You could do this, if you really hated yourself.

There was the World of Warcraft Iron Man Challenge where the idea was to see how far you could get as far as leveling without dying once. The rules were: 1. Can't equip anything anything higher than White in quality. That includes Legion's Artifact Weapon and BFA's Heart of Azeroth. Can't use either of them. 2. Can only use the baseline skills given to you as you level. No talents or conduit powers, etc. 3. No gear enchantments. Only exception is Death Knight's runeforging as it's a baseline power and not a talent you choose or an item you purchase. 4. No potions, elixirs, etc. that buff stats or XP boosts. The full ruleset is here. wowchallenges.com/challangeinfo/iron-man/

My favorite streamer, Mike Matei of AVGN fame, actually does self-imposed challenges of which he actually pulls off doing them.
Among them are:
NES Beating Batman without dying once Beating Battletoads without using warps or continues Beating Bucky O'Hare on Hard mode (mode that can be unlocked with a password where it is one-hit deaths) Beating Contra without dying and using the standard weapon (pea shooter) only Beating Castlevania one time with whip only and one time without dying Beating Ducktales without dying on Difficult and getting the Good Ending Getting as far as possible in Ghosts'n Goblins using the torch weapon only (i.e. the point where you have to use the shield weapon to progress through the game) Beating Mega Man with buster only Beating Ninja Gaiden without dying and using no sub-weapons Beating Ninja Gaiden 3 without dying Beating Super C without dying Beating Super Mario Bros. without dying and using no warps Beating Super Mario Bros. 2 with Mario only Beating Super Mario Bros. 3 without dying and using no warps Beating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by using Raphael only and using no sub-weapons Getting as far as possible in The Legend Of Zelda with three hearts only and using no sword (i.e. up to the final fight with Ganon who can only be beaten with a sword weapon) Beating Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link with the level 1 sword only
