Jeremy Brett without question. He picked up on a side of the character that no one else has before or since, the manic depression.
It's most common for actors to access the Sherlock character through his drug addiction or his possible aspergers, making him a one dimensional high functioning sociopathic asshole. Brett had his own twist on the character, but kept him three dimensional, still being able to be a polite gentleman and interact normally.
Jeremy Brett, a manic depressive himself, noticed Doyle's descriptions of the character as having both extreme high moods and dark, sullen moods. The drug use was not an end unto itself, but in response to his depressive episodes.
It's even theorized that Jeremy Brett's portrayal of a manic depressive might have exacerbated his own mental health issues.

I'm kind of leaning Peter Cushing. He and Christopher Lee could have stood to have some more chances with it.

Out of the ones I've seen, Jeremy Brett. As far as actors doing the role went, I always felt that everyone else played Sherlock Holmes. Brett was Sherlock Holmes.

Damn, RDJ didn't even make the poll. I was gonna vote for him, too. The first Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite movies. *solemnly clicks on other*

I remember reading about the movie and disliking their interpretation, until I actually watched it and gave it a chance. I liked that they kept a lot of the period specific language, which I noticed they toned down in the second one. And speaking of, I enjoy the plot of the second movie more, and while I couldn't get behind that Moriarty, I loved the last act and how they had their mental duel.

Picked Basil Rathbone because he's the first I saw so he's the first I think of.
But I really enjoyed Michael Caine's portrayal in "Without A Clue".
