Not doing the planned HHH WM main event would have killed business. They had no choice. Based on what? Ratings went up and Cena started getting cheered when Edge had the belt then both returned to the status quo when he lost it. I was watching at the time, and the Edge cash in was the most interesting thing I'd seen in a long time. It was new, exciting, and as we glimpsed then and would see later on, Edge and Cena had great chemistry. I was totally invested. The ratings indeed spiked when Edge won, and I bet the Wrestlemania buy rate would have as well if they had kept it going. Triple H being involved is what killed business.

Mania 21 was so exciting with the first MITB match, the two new faces of the company being crowned, Legend Killer Orton facing Taker. Mania 22 was just flat to me. The Cena Trips build was trash, the triple threat was off to me with Angles hasty no reason face turn. And did anyone think Henry was going to beat Taker? Having Cena chase Edge for the title would have been a huge improvement IMO. We would have lost Edge Foley but that could have been a Backlash match leading to ONS.

Not doing the planned HHH WM main event would have killed business. They had no choice. Nah, not at all. If anything, people were tired of seeing Triple H in the title picture all the time. He had already been in the title picture every year at Wrestlemania sans 2001, and then there's the fact he spent the better part of 2002-2005 as World Heavyweight Champion. At that point, it was time to move on & do something fresh for a change, and that's exactly what Edge vs Cena would've provided.
As a matter of fact, Edge garnered a lot of interest when he won the WWE Championship from Cena at NYE. It was new, it was fresh, and it made a lot of people interested. Sure enough, we all figured he'd be defending against Cena at Wrestlemania, but that was besides the point. After years of seeing Triple H in the title picture, it looked like things were going to be different for once. We have a brand new champion heading into Wrestlemania. It was Edge's very first run with the title, so the prospect of that going into Wrestlemania was a very intriguing one.
Then you look at the great chemistry Cena & Edge had together when they feuded, so there's no doubt in my mind the match would've been amazing.

It always amazes me how the hardcore fans rallied around Triple H as much as they did. These would be the same fans that were cursing his very name for years for his (in their words) "Reign Of Terror" up until the previous WrestleMania. Was what Cena was doing as a lead babyface really THAT MUCH WORSE that you felt like you had to look to f***in' Triple H as your knight in (literally) shining armour?

I guess I needed to add a bit more over the top flattery about the biggest draw of our lifetime. Main event of Mania that year should have been Cena getting revenge on Edge and winning the title back.

I took it less as the same people complaining, and more a demonstration of a fault line amongst the Cena-hating crowd. There were hardcore fans who hated both Triple H and Cena, but there's also always been a very strong pocket of older male fans who audibly love Triple H - many of whom seemingly also hated Cena, at least at this juncture. Trips has gotten those big cheers more often than not, and it seems likely that it's the same people who do bowing gestures at Vince or who pop for Shane or who took Kane seriously in the 10's. It says something about the Authority angle that it managed to kill even the baseline positivity a lot of these fans have towards Trips, Kane, and Show - at least for a while.
