We get the big buzz when Edge finally cashes in. I was of the assumption, this was going to be at least a reign he holds on to until Wrestlemania.
The natural path it was going to take was Edge vs. John Cena main eventing Wrestlemania 22.
Somehow it became HHH vs. Cena at Wrestlemania 22 and I don't get it.
Why was Edge's first title run cut so short?

Because Triple H wanted to get involved in a storyline that would allow him to feed off the popularity of others?

Cena vs Triple H was the plan for Mania. They realized that they had to do something with the MITB briefcase before Mania so they did. They were unprepared for the reaction to Edge and unwilling to change their plans to capitalize on it.

They couldn’t have Edge lose the cash in, it would completely kill the draw of MitB, but they had no long term plans for him at that point. It really wasn’t until the summer where you could tell they were getting faith in him as a main eventer, him spiking ratings when he won the first title caught them completely off guard.

They were committed to Triple H getting the Mania main event so just pressed onward regardless of how little sense it made.
Still kind of roll my eyes at how the whole idea was supposedly for Triple H to put Cena over but he spent the entire feud shitting on him, lost in a pretty fluky way, immediately pinned him the next night, and didn't lose a singles match to Cena again until one of the Saudi Arabia shows.

At least we got Foley / Edge out of it.

Wasn't there some interview where Trips said that the only reason Angle and Jericho got cheered against Cena was because they were ineffective heels? Implying that he was the amazing awesome heel who could get the crowd on Cena's side? And then most of his promos against Cena were him talking about Cena as if he were a flippy indy guy instead of a heavyweight charisma machine, while also agreeing with the growing hardcore fan notion that Cena sucked in the ring. One tack that was disingenuous, the other was pandering to the hardcores for who knows what reason, and the two aspects added up to a whole lot of nothing.

At least we got Foley / Edge out of it. That match was great, but then again considering the insane chemistry that Edge and Cena had, a Cena/Edge main event would have been one of the greatest of all time.
Edge should have been in the main event, but as WWE had already changed the other World Title Match with Batista getting injured, they didn't want to change the other despite Edge being absolutely white hot at the time.

This was one of the first times I can recall modern WWE being inflexible with their plans after somebody got over, TBH. Edge wound up fine either way, but they really should have just done Edge/Cena at Mania. Edge ended up Cena's best rival anyways, IMO.

Edge, Orton and Punk were all his biggest rivals but he’s never had any Mania matches with any of them

Looking back, they didn't even bother building a hype package for the feud; they just aired a press conference about the match. I can't recall a damn thing Triple H did. Apparently, there was a tournament, which he won (duh), and spent time talking about how much Cena sucks. Regardless, the crowd were so anti-Cena that they would have been happy with another Triple H championship reign.

It was also the beginning of Hunter’s first face turn since his 6 month face run in 2002 so fans were VERY open to the idea of getting behind him. The DX reunion was like 2 months later, and I know people don’t look back too fondly on that now but they were over as f*** that summer.

Yep... both HHH and Shawn teased it in their matches that night with crotch chops.

Because at that time, Triple H had to be in the title match at 'Mania.
Heck, one year they had the Rumble winner face the champion a month early, just so Trips could get inserted into the Wrestlemania match.

Because you see they HAD to do Triple H and Cena. They couldn't deviate from a compelling program such as that. When else would you ever see something as inspired as Trips in a Mania title program?

They didn’t strike on the Edge momentum until months later.

Not doing the planned HHH WM main event would have killed business. They had no choice.

Not doing the planned HHH WM main event would have killed business. They had no choice. Based on what? Ratings went up and Cena started getting cheered when Edge had the belt then both returned to the status quo when he lost it.
