Interesting video about the history of Public Domain cartoons on VHS, including some of the darker side of the industry (Warning for language and clips from "questionable" cartoons) www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2RWJEI_D74

Always found PD tapes so intriguing for how scummy they can get, especially in situations like just how many tapes were taped over porn videos.

Most of the VHS I had before the age of 10 were public domain cartoon videos. I guess my parents logic was “if we have to watch the same shit every day it might as well be shit we grew up on”

I should point out (as I did in the comments section for this video) that Celebrity werent really a PD company per se. They're mostly known (among anime fans) for their dubbed and reedited version of Macross: Do You Remember Love (retitled Clash of the Bionoids).

I had this strange tape with the Comicolor cartoon of Dick Wittington's Cat and a Disney Humphrey the Bear short "Hooked Bear". Quality was awful.
Though as I type this I realize this wasn't some tape bought from an official store but something pirated my parents bought from a dodgy person at the pub. As people did in 90's Scotland.

I had one with the Fleischer Superman Shorts. (horribly dubbed into German. Transfer had a few frames missing sometimes.) I loved these as a kid. So much, that I went on a quest to re buy these on DVD some years ago. Found one containing all the Fleischer Supermans, and what do you know? Exact same transfers. Missing frames, dubs and all. I would presume these will never get proper remasters over here. :/
EDIT: Never mind, I just went on YouTube. Holy Shit do I love nerds!

The Superman movie box set also has all of the shorts, if you're interested in owning a hard copy (on a side note, thats a great set, the first 5 Superman films, the Fleischer and Famous Superman shorts, The Superpup pilot, Superman vs the Mole Men, the Looney Tunes shorts that did Superman parodies (Super Rabbit, Super Duck, and Snafuperman) and a ton of tv specials and documentaries.).

These pd cartoon tapes plus Disney tapes were pretty much my earliest childhood cartoons.
And the box art was almost always terrible.

My grandparents or uncle bought me a few PD cartoon tapes as a kid. My parents got the legit stuff or we used blank tapes and recorded off the TV.

Also, considering some of the more "questionable" cartoons that showed up on these tapes, surprised they didnt stick on any Bosko cartoons (either WB or MGM), at least none of the tapes shown in this video.

That box set is incredible, I bought it the day it came out way back in 2006. Pretty sure everything carried over to the Blu Ray set but I don’t actually own that, just the DVD in the metal tin, so I could be wrong

I am now thinking of two instances with Popeye cartoons that I've seen.
Because "Popeye the Sailor Man" was not public domain, the tapes had to find "creative" ways to obscure it. I recall seeing the open of a PD Fleischer Popeye where they just slapped generic music over the opening, which ran into the beginning of the short because Popeye sings the song.
Another one was from the Famous Studios period, which on top of having one of those AAP title cards and openings plastered over the Paramount ones, now just looped the part of the theme that was just The Sailor's Hornpipe over and over until the end, where they just cut to the end of TSH (as heard near the end of a Popeye opening) and it was a car crash of music/sound of anything that was not Popeye the Sailor Man.
These were on my Closing Logo Group Megamix VHS tapes but I have yet to see either again. (someone else has those tapes, BTW)
EDIT: Part One shows a lot of that creepy/generic "The END" screen that I'd see a lot when I had Urban America TV and they reran Looney Tunes.

This was very interesting, crazy how many times these companies got in trouble for using old porn tapes. Kind of makes me interested in trying to collect as many as possible to see what might lie hidden on the tapes lol

Holy crap.
Amvest's address was a few blocks from where I used to work. Heck it's still close to my jobs now.
And there is a Part Two, as I'm sure some of you saw.
