Austin vs. Goldberg in 98.
Austin vs. WCW Hollywood Hogan in 98.
Austin vs. WWF Hollywood Hogan at Wrestlemania 18 in place of the Rock match.
Austin vs. Goldberg at Wrestlemania 20 if he didn't have to retire.
Austin vs. red and yellow Hogan at Wrestlemania 22 which was rumored in late 2005.
Bonus question, what would have been the best match in-ring wise?

Tough call between the two '98 matches... I picked Austin/Goldberg because Goldberg would be willing to listen to Austin guide him through a match. Hogan would have wanted "his style" of match and his shtick had gotten old by then, and a lot of fans were tired of it.
So Stone Cold/Gold for both questions.

Austin vs. Goldberg during the summer of 1998 when both guys were champion would have drawn the biggest buyrate or rating that pro wrestling would have ever been capable of.

Austin/Goldberg '98 for the biggest match.
As for best match, Austin/Hogan '98 would have had the most potential. It all would have depended on if Hogan was insistent on going over or if they could get him into a torch passing mindset.

Probably vs Goldberg in 1998.
I do think Austin vs Hogan in 2002 would have been big, too, but I get why Austin was likely not interested. It'd have been huge in 1998, too, if Hogan was willing to do business, but Goldberg vs Austin would have been the hotter ticket.

With his neck, Austin could never work with Goldberg whereas Hogan is safe enough Lance Storm literally said he would let him punch his children

If Goldberg was willing to let Austin lead him, it could have been something, but Goldberg, for his obvious physical ability, has basically never had enough discipline.

Austin/Goldberg by a pretty big margin.
I remember back then it was a constant discussion on the rumor mill.
Does anyone have any memories of it being rumored to happen and how it would be booked? The weirder/less realistic the better.
Two things I remember…
-It would take place on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. This would allow a huge audience on neautral ground, though I think by that point Leno had already started working with WCW.
-The finish would be Goldberg trying to spear Austin, but Austin kicking him in the head (like he would do to set up the stunner). The force of both being enough to send both guys outside the ring, leading to a double count out.

I'm just trying to picture them selling that for a ten count, and how the hell that'd work. I do wonder, if they DID want to go the "neutral ground" route, if they could have managed that with something like Ventura as special ref or an mediator. He'd worked for WWF and WCW, with acrimonious breaks with both companies. Barring that, probably them throwing money at a famous ref like Mills Lane.

Like how would they both pop out of the ring and be down that long while making it look realistic? Plus, with the screwy finish I’d imagine fans would be pissed.

Like, if you were going to do that, you may as well have like a dozen heels rush the ring for a No Contest and just have Austin and Goldberg beat them up and share beers.
