See...this also doesn't make sense. Roman got COVID and not only kept the title, but was back on TV when he was able to. So...why didn't they just have him keep the belt and crown a contender and have him lose it to them? It didn't seem he was that bad health-wise to not do it. Also, to the wider point, why didn't they just say he had COVID? They said as much for Drew when he got it earlier that year. I imagine that the idea was that, if Joe was going to be out for weeks or maybe long if he had complications, and they were going to do a changing of the guard, anyway, then WWE probably felt it made little difference either way. I disagree with this, since the title at the time had been going through a series of screw ups, starting at least as far back as Kross getting injured. Joe losing it directly to someone would have helped pass the baton more, though I guess it wasn't what WWE deemed a priority at the time. As for the second point, could be Joe didn't want to say it at the time, but I'm guessing it's more WWE was loathe to tell anyone about COVID diagnoses at the time unless they basically had to.
