Undisclosed medical reason is covid. www.fightful.com/wrestling/samoa-joe-relinquished-nxt-title-after-positive-covid-test-vince-mcmahon-changing-nxt-direction"I popped for COVID. It was the weekend, my wife was making stew and I couldn't smell it. She said, 'Wow, doesn't that smell great.' I said, 'No.' I tested positive on Saturday. By then, Vince wanted to go in a different direction with NXT and he wanted to have the new opening with NXT 2.0 be with a bang and I agreed with him. I said, 'If that's the case, this is probably what's best for what your vision is for this product.' I went behind the scenes and started working with talent on a one to one basis, pulling guys individually in open gyms, working with them, and focusing on these new tremendous prospects were brought in and people that were hungry to learn and excited about this newfound opportunity. It was invigorating for me. When you're working with younger talent that are hungry and want to succeed on a high level, it amps up your own spirit. I was delving into that heavily. Working with Matt Bloom on revising things, training techniques, and evaluating what we were doing already and seeing if we could do it better. That was really the end of my tenure at WWE,"

See...this also doesn't make sense.
Roman got COVID and not only kept the title, but was back on TV when he was able to.
So...why didn't they just have him keep the belt and crown a contender and have him lose it to them? It didn't seem he was that bad health-wise to not do it.
Also, to the wider point, why didn't they just say he had COVID? They said as much for Drew when he got it earlier that year.

There was nothing stopping them from having the match they had to determine number one contender and then have whoever they want beat Joe for the title a week or two after. It's not as if they put the title on someone brand new. They put it on Ciampa, an NXT veteran. Why not just have Joe put Ciampa over? Even if you wanted Joe off TV, have him put someone over in the process.

It feels like their need to have the 2.0 reboot happen as suddenly and instantaneously as possible, planning or whatever be damned has really bitten them so far.

I suspect he didn't fit the mold they wanted to present to the droves of new fans they thought would jump onboard. I don't know what was behind Ciampa as their choice beyond established vet. But if they felt he was a better choice to present than Joe it would not seem too far fetched that Vince sees some of himself in Ciampa's tough guy persona and resented Joe being hired back after released.

Even putting that all aside...just say he has COVID. If he's not the perfect suitable guy, ok, sure, but...just say he had COVID and he has to be out. Why all the secrecy and speculation? That more gets me than whatever logic surrounded him not losing the title on the show.

Sounds like Joe basically said, "Yeah, I'm out for two weeks and you want to do something huge for the rewatch... here's your title..." and Vince was like, "thanks pal, good shit!"

That more gets me than whatever logic surrounded him not losing the title on the show. All I can think of is he asked for it not to be revealed. Which I guess is fair but...I don't know, man, I'd rather people worry about him having COVID then having a tonne of needless speculation about his health and his company status.

This still makes me put the tin foil hat on where he was literally brought back to NXT as an active competitor as a last ditch effort to get a ratings bump and when that didn't happen Vince lost interest.
Like others have said the needless speculation just seemed weird
