Nah, Warrior vs Savage started it at Mania with 5 elbow drops, a gorilla press slam and three running shoulder tackles

The finisher-fest no-sell kickout thing that all the supposed "great matches" have is one of my least favorite things about modern wrestling. The WM25 match was great, and so was the build, and so was the years of anticipation to see them finally clash once again after the Rumble encounter and because of their history together and status as legends. That match had such tremendous purpose; it was an epic encounter that deserved to be spectacular and unbelievable. When someone kicks out of a finisher, it should mean something. It happens so much now that wrestling feels like I'm watching a video game. This. These two earned the right to do this over decades so it all meant something. A random mid-card match with no real build or wider purpose doesn't need it. Although sometimes I think wrestlers are moving away from that. Other times even avalanches or weapon assisted versions aren't enough.

If you want to blame someone for that in WWF, blame The Rock suggesting it for his WrestleMania 15 match with Austin. "I want to kick out of the Stunner, and I want you to be the first person to kick out of the Rock Bottom" as Austin later put it. I think a Wrestlemania main event is fair enough to be kicking out of finishers. It's traditionally the biggest match of the year. It wasn't a serious putdown. Though with everything, the less it happens, the more it matters. I can't recall seeing folk kick out of a lot of modern WWE finishers but then I probably haven't been paying attention.

Most good wrestling in the west is ripped off from Japan, and most good wrestling in WWE is ripped off from the indies, and it doesn't become part of WWE's proper 'style' until an old Attitude Era f*** does it, so yeah this match ruined wrestling

I like long matches, where the first person to hit their finisher wins. Spend all match countering/avoiding the finisher.

I kind of agree with Orton. Yeah there were matches like that before, but when the the Taker/HBK rematch and the HHH and Taker matches after the kicking out of finishers got out of control.
It's at I can't stand most Cena matches as a lot of the later ones were just finisher fests.

It sure as hell wasn't Bob Backlund's fault. He was winning world titles with a single atomic drop.

Nah, Warrior vs Savage started it at Mania with 5 elbow drops, a gorilla press slam and three running shoulder tackles I disagree. That match was good enough people don’t even feel the need to shit on Warrior for kicking out of 5 elbow drops and pinning Savage with his foot. People will shit on Warrior for taking two pennies from the Take a Penny, Leave a Penny tray. Even if it did, no one emulated that match for years and years and years after.

Could you imagine how angry people would get now with someone kicking out of five finishers in a row like that? Savage got lucky in that he had the storyline where he had to retire because he lost, so for all intents and purposes it didn’t matter that Warrior kicked out of five elbow drops because Savage wasn’t gonna have another match ever again (at least until November anyway). It’s just another criteria in the big list of “The office don’t see you as worth a damn UNLESS…” things, I’m afraid.
