Are you a fan of the new trend of having seasons only 10 episodes long, or do you prefer the usual 22?
I love the shorter type they have these days. No unnecessary, superflous episodes, just focus on telling the story at hand, yet still have enough time to include character building and filling out backstories.

I prefer six episodes. Quality over quantity.

It depends on what you're doing with it. It can be rushed sometimes, but it can also be a better use of resources sometimes.

I do not mind it but I prefer 22/23 episode seasons just simply because more episodes means more story and more time to spend in that world with those characters and they get more of chance to really flesh them out.

For shows that have a focused storyline 6-10 is great. For shows lean heavily on formula type episodes (like House/Bones/NCIS etc) the 22 is nice just for the sheer amount of content.

It greatly depends on the show and the stories being told.
If a show is making filler episodes, then the run is too long, but if they're cramming, it's too short.

I always find filler serves a purpose not only to give a bit of levity and break from the main story but to let the side characters get in on their own little adventures.
Now the quality of that filler whole other thing.

When I watch old shows now I'm astonished how many episodes there are of stuff in one season.
I get wanting "more time in that world" but I only have so many hours to devote to said worlds. I have other shit I need to do besides watch tv.

It entirely depends on the show in my opinion. Something like Simpson’s or CSI can hammer out as many episodes a season as they want for all I care because they aren’t heavily serialized, but shows that are heavily story focused should keep things tighter and only produce as many episodes as needed to tell the story. Hell, I’m in the process of watching Peaky Blinders and I f***ing love the 6 episode seasons.

For me, the sweet spot is 12-18, depending on the show. I don't mind the occasional filler episode. Sometimes those wind up being some of my favorites in a series (like Supernatural, for example) because they're not as tethered to a big story arc and can just have a bit of fun. 10 has a tendency to feel a little *too* short for me in most cases. I've waited for these characters to return, I don't want my time with them to be over *too* soon.
More than 18 starts getting a little dicey, especially if the show is an hour per episode. A lot of shows with a 22 episode order start to feel like they're treading water trying to fill that much time.

some shows work better with less episodes, some work better with more episodes.
Game of thrones probably wouldnt have been as big a hit with 23 episode seasons(without saying anything about how the shorter than the rest last two seasons.), conversely supernatural probably would have lost some of it's magic by having shorter seasons for example.
mrs brown's boys would have benefitted from being a much, much shorter series of 0 episodes.

A good idea for some shows would be shorter seasons as the show goes on. Shows like Buffy and Babylon 5. Long seasons with lots of filler early on helped flesh out the setting and help you get to know the characters. Later as the shows got heavier into myth arcs shorter seasons would have been nice to keep things moving.

Vikings Valhalla was 8 and I loved it.
I think, especially with brand new shows, shorter is better.

I'd prefer the writer be honest with themselves about "how many episodes do I need to get a complete story done while leaving enough to pick up on should we get another one?"
22 episodes a season for a dramatic series honestly sounds nuts and it's going to lend itself to a lot of fluff. Lost was able to do it effectively but a lot of shows can't just do endless flashbacks.
