89 - Ax and Smash. Nicely set the tone for the “no friends in the Rumble” line that is still used today. 93 - Flair and Backlund. How many years as World Champion between these two? 08 - HBK and Taker. The final two from the previous year start us off. 11 - Punk and Bryan. The smart fans cough their filthy yoghurt as these two get it on in a “major”

I'm a sucker for the first 2 in the Rumble being the last 2 left so:
Shawn and Bulldog in '95 Triple H and Rey in '06 (I know last two were Orton and Rey but still)
and of course
Austin and Mcmahon in '99, lol

I also liked the Ax and Smash as #1 and 2 but some of the numbers in that rumble were a kayfabe killer. The whole gimmick was Dibiase buying a number which led to Akeem and Bossman getting numbers back to back yet the Demolition and the Brain Buster BOTH had back to back numbers.

Undertaker and Shawn Michaels in 2008 because they were the last two on it the year prior. Also liked Benoit and Orton in 2004.

I was going to say Bulldog and Flair, but then I remembered DiBiase was sandwiched in between them.

Ax and Smash, as it was unexpected but they still went at it because they had to.

I also have to go with Ax and Smash as my fave. But DiBiase and Koko the next year was pretty great, too, with DiBiase visibly a wreck over being stuck with No. 1.
Also liked Helmsley and Henry Godwinn starting things off in '96, since they were feuding at the time. That Rumble tends not to get a lot of love, but I thought it was a fun one.

Here comes the Ax, and here comes the Smasher... Just that moment when the theme music starts to play for the second time and the penny drops... so exciting!

The whole gimmick was Dibiase buying a number which led to Akeem and Bossman getting numbers back to back yet the Demolition and the Brain Buster BOTH had back to back numbers. I actually liked the whole bit with the Dibiase and Slick trade in that it benefitted both parties. Like yeah you are giving up #30 which is giving up a lot but at the same time you are getting both of your guys back to back and it worked in that Boss Man and Akeem were able to eliminate Hogan as a result which you think would've paved the way for Dibiase to win except for the fact that washed up looking like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world Big John Studd ended up being too much for him. One thing I didn't get though is Boss Man and Akeem entered at numbers 22 and 23 both of which are pretty good draws. So why was Dibiase so pissed? I mean I guess the answer is because he's a greedy millionaire and would only be satisfied with #30 however anyone would know the chances of drawing that number are slim to none so that didn't make much sense to me. Also like you said it was kind of kayfabe killer. After Akeem enters Gorilla is going on about how there's way you could back to back numbers like that which didn't make sense since as you said two other teams, Demolition and the Brain Busters, got back to back numbers.
