Considering Pike was EASILY the highlight of Discovery season 2, I'm cautiously looking forward to this.
Cautiously, because of just about everything else Star Trek for the last decade.

This actually looks like Star Trek to be honest. I’d be all for a show that was the same tone as TOS. So I think this might have some promise.

The Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley will join the cast in season two. {Spoiler}Wonder if this means they're gonna write Pike off getting to his Academy job for Season 2 and giving Kirk an earlier run in the Enterprise chair, or maybe Kirk is brought in Season 2 as a second officer under Pike and Number One to get some early experience before Enterprise is his.
Either way, that makes three TOS characters (not counting Pike and Number One since they were pilot only) that have been given a third actor now (since Uhura's also part of this series. |

Best I can tell Strange New Worlds takes place around 2258-'59, and Kirk canonically is serving aboard the Farragut in 2257 and takes command of the Enterprise no later than 2265, so there's potentially a few years to play around with.
Kirk could be captain of the Farragut during the show, though in any case his involvement in the show does retcon the line from "The Menagerie" where Kirk says he only ever met Pike once, when Pike was promoted to fleet captain... assuming he and Pike actually do meet in Strange New Worlds. |

Gene Roddenberry and his writing team had no idea his quirky sci-fi show would spawn a gargantuan universe that people would still be adding to almost 60 years later, so ignoring or retconning little details here and there from a show where the focus was on writing entertaining TV and getting renewed for the next year is perfectly acceptable in my eyes. Maybe not rewriting huge chunks of lore, but anywhere where there's wriggle room to slip something in a gap in the timeline? A-okay. |

Honestly there's so much terminology and references from TOS that have already been retconned by TNG and later shows and movies (and within TOS itself; like the Enterprise changing from being specifically an Earth ship to the Federation). Like they used quadrant pretty much to refer to any decent sized area of space instead of "one of the four quarters of the entire galaxy" like everything else. And Leonard Nimoy once said this (granted it was about Trek 2009, but I think it applies here, too):
"Canon is only important to certain people because they have to cling to their knowledge of the minutiae. Open your mind! Be a ‘Star Trek’ fan and open your mind and say, ‘Where does Star Trek want to take me now?’."

Like they used quadrant pretty much to refer to any decent sized area of space instead of "one of the four quarters of the entire galaxy" like everything else. Probably the most noticeable one is the retconning of the Starfleet insignia we all know and love:  It was originally just the insignia of the Enterprise, with each ship having its own unique insignia. That was pretty much dropped in the third season, and officially retconned in TMP. Since then, of course, the insignia has been used by non-Enterprise ships prior to TOS, such as in Discovery and the Kelvin timeline before the point where time diverged, leading to a further retcon that only the Constitution-class ships in TOS had their own unique insignias. |

I really like what I've seen with Hemmer and (Cadet) Uhura. Ortegas looks like a fun character, too.
Not sure what to make of La'an, though I really hope they don't go the "going to turn evil because KHAAAAAAAN" route with her.
