Yeah, this is going down with certain parts of the fanbase about as well as you're fearing.

I'm sure you will be shocked to learn that there are many bad faith arguments coming from the "Robert April is white!" crowd. Officially TAS was rendered non-canon in 1988 at Gene Roddenberry's request, though Alex Kurtzman and AKiva Goldsman have stated that they consider some aspects of it canon, such as Spock Two, who featured in Lower Decks (in skeleton form).

It does really depend on if you count TAS as canon to the rest of Trek (it's been an off and on discussion except for the episode "Yesteryear"). "Lower Decks" includes some TAS stuff but some debate that show's canonicity too (Though I think one of the main crew was cameo mentioned in the first episode of Picard Season 2.) Either way, that's been Robert April's official on-screen appearance (not counting mentions in a couple of Discovery episodes), though he has appeared in comics before too. And in the Star Trek Encyclopedia they photo-manipulated a young Gene Roddenberry's head onto pilot episode Kirk's body to represent him:

There's been some pretty deep cuts, too.

I've enjoyed some of the newer Star Trek fare but I've been wanting a series that focuses on exploration for some time and I think others have as well. I'm excited for this and curious to see where it goes. I've only really seen the first season and part of the second of the original series so a lot of it will be fresh (especially since so much changed even in the first season).
Really though, I'm just looking forward to exploring.

The Kzinti being canon is probably the strangest thing to make canon. IIRC they were just lifted wholesale from a completely different Scifi universe created by the writer of those TAS eps.

As if there weren't enough terrible things about bigots now they have to pretend to care about TAS.

They promised us "more familiar" Trek, and that first episode delivered. Lots of fun, some great character moments, and it all felt so very comfortable.

Absolutely perfect episode. Loved every single aspect It was everything you want from a Star Trek show if you’ve been a longtime fan. I started watching with TNG, I’m born in 1986, but dad was insistent on me watching TOS and the movies. This felt like the Star Trek my dad went out of his way to make sure I watched. Basically start to finish I had a tiny tear in the corner of my eye, it was just a fun f***ing show. No Klingon titties or f bombs trying to be edgy, just a pure “what if we made TOS with modern cinematography techniques?” EDIT: I will amend this, when Stamets and Tilly had their “that’s really f***in cool” moment was pretty adorable and in line with ST. Completely unnecessary to drop an f bomb on ST, but it was a good scene

No Klingon titties or f bombs trying to be edgy, just a pure “what if we made TOS with modern cinematography techniques?” Almost the exact same background, though I've only caught a handful of TOS episodes. Seen every movie of Kirk's Enterprise and have watched Star Trek all my life. I might be a bit more forgiving of Discovery and Picard's changes, but Strange New Worlds is everything I've wanted out of a Star Trek show in a couple decades. Was hardcore cheering and loving every minute. Can tell they put a lot of love into making it and modernizing things without losing the essence of what was being conveyed in TOS.
