I made a thread similar to this a few weeks back, but I narrowed down the options to what I think are the best periods for both companies. WCW from May of 96 to December of 97 or WWF from January 2000 to April of 2001

I'm in the minority of people that actually prefer Jan 2000-March 2001 of WCW over 1996-1997. The nWo just bores the shit out of me and I much prefer WWF around this time period, particularly 1997.
So yes, with the respective time periods listed, WWF wins

Both were must-see weekly TV but the WWF had way better PPVs which puts it over the top for me. There are so many all-time greats just from that 14 month period. Almost every PPV in 2000 was great and in 2001 you had maybe the greatest run of 3 PPVS ever with RR/NWO/WM. A lot of the time even at it's hottest WCW didn't deliver on PPV. NWO Hogan main events just can't compare to Rock/Austin/HHH/Angle/Foley regularly putting on classics in 00-01 and one of the main things WCW had over WWF in 96-97 (a better midcard) was rectified in 2000 with the emergence of Edge/Christian/Hardys/Dudleys/Too Cool and the arrivals of Jericho/Angle/Benoit/Guerrero/Saturn/Malenko/Tazz.
I think the best overall year for wrestling though was 1998 because both companies were riding high and doing massive ratings while a year earlier WWF was struggling and a year later WCW started to tank. In 1998 wrestling felt like the biggest thing in the world.

That period of WWF is my favourite in all of wrestling.
Watching aew over the last week got me wondering what wrestling would be like now without it, especially if the tlc rivalry never happened. Also hhh not retiring Foley, Crash not popularising matches in unusual locations, Trish and Lita not inspiring a generation of women, Jericho/Angle/Benoit etc repopularising technical styles etc and the knock on effects of those.
Guess you could say that about many years, even the crap ones but it still seems more influential than most.

2000 WWF is my jam. Not all of it was great, but I still enjoy most of it. It's my favorite year ever.

WCW had the better TV but the WWF PPVs were a lot better. So it's tough but I'd lean WCW.

Maybe it's just me but whenever I watch any WWF from that period, it's hard to piece together that WCW was still alive at the same time? In its batshit Russo era no less?
The war really felt over like a year before it actually was.

I'm going with the one that had great cruiserweight matches and no McMahons.

Even as a WCW fan first, their hottest period had a lot of bad shows with weird choices. The WWF between January 2000 and April 01 is one of the hottest runs for any promotion ever - even their mistakes were mostly covered over, like having Triple H go over at Mania 2000 generating a monster buyrate for Backlash.
They got three of the best undercard guys in WCW, plus Kurt Angle, they had compelling storylines right down to the hardcore title, they had Jericho, like... what a time
