..who was the best at it?
I'd say you get a lot of examples seen at indy shows and cons.
ECW Zombie took the WWECW premiere and made a career being booked at indies for years until his passing.
I would also mention Tom Brandi, when he's not posing as The Patriot, STILL portraying Sal Sincere to this day.

James Ellsworth got a few years of notoriety out of what was originally just supposed to be one-off squash match.

Was there any real plans for Gene Snitzky other than his match with Kane?

Dammit, took mine. Well, I encourage everyone to pretend Ellsworth never existed and instead to focus on the original, Colin Delaney, who's still doing well for himself on the indies.

Harold (Scorpio Sky) in the Anger Management sketches.
Honorable Mention : Mikaze as Rutherford PS Hayes of the Commanders-in-Chief (jobber team that Ryback squashed)

Like that funny segment on Impact recently where Mike Bennett said "Hey, I know you!" to Moose, who Bennett brought in originally as his bodyguard?

Like that funny segment on Impact recently where Mike Bennett said "Hey, I know you!" to Moose, who Bennett brought in originally as his bodyguard? Pretty much. Just a bit where Danielson walks pasts Sky and glances at him before turning to the camera with a "hey, that guy looks familiar?" expression.

If they do it, I'm not sure I'd put it together in the moment unless the guy who played Dr. Shelby was there in another role.

James Ellsworth got a few years of notoriety out of what was originally just supposed to be one-off squash match. There is a fed in North MS,one that has tv up that way, that books Ellsworth often. Either since they book him often he cut them a deal or they like dropping 400 plus trans for James. Dude also charges for interviews, friend with a podcast back in summer of 2020 got an email from Ellsworth asking if he wanted to interview James. Friend said sure, then Ellsworth replied with a price, was like 30 bucks....

Oh, how about Gargano and Ciampa, indie nobodies filling up space and working without contracts, turning themselves into the absolute top two guys in NXT?
