Kevin Owens and Elias in Seattle after they mentioned basketball. Both of those dudes were heels at the time, the face turns would come later in the fall. And Elias didn't just mention basketball, he said that a basketball team in Seattle made no sense, opening up the wound from when the Sonics left.
If they were in Montreal and Elias had said a baseball team in that city made no sense, it probably would have had the same reaction.

Ryback's turn on Cena was so well-received by the crowd that people doubted he had actually turned at all for the first couple of weeks. Michael Cole's commentary was infuriating, he was trying so hard to make it clear that Ryback had turned heel just because it was Cena that he attacked.

Seeing as they were technically heels on WWF television you gotta give a nod to the Hart Foundation at Canadian Stampede. as a Canadian it's so difficult for me to remember the Hart Foundation were supposed to be heels everywhere else.

It's amazing how much louder they got form introducing each member of the foundation, 1 by 1.

I don’t know why people cite a babyface being booed as a big deal (‘he’s supposed to be the face and he’s not over’) but a heel getting cheered isn’t see the same way. In both cases they aren’t getting the desired reaction and it’s a reflection on them. For the same reason that when a movie produces an interesting, sympathetic villain that the audience takes to, it's seen as deeper and more complex for it, while a movie with an unlikable protagonist is usually dragged through the mud for it. It's not a 1:1 comparison because some people just like the bad guy and see a good villain as something to appreciate. When a heel ends up liked for how great a heel they are, they've usually gone way beyond the bar and succeeded past the baseline. When a face ends up booed, they've usually fallen short of the bar. It's in fact opposite issues if you look at it from an issue of where those reactions come from instead of statically 'people cheer wrong'.

That all felt like a blur. I seriously thought they were faces at the time. Goes to show how crappy WWE booking is when you can't even differentiate their booking.

one of the best heel promos of all time. Which was 100% the type of reaction they were going for with it... it's a shame they immediately walked back on it with Cole's lines and then Roman's usual wishy washy bullshit promo the next week before Braun did the hilariously overly long beatdown. Technically, Braun was heel during that time, but got massive cheers for beating the shit out of Roman.

When Rey came out at 30 during that one Rumble where folks wanted Bryan to come out 😭😭 oh my god, they set a legend up to get eaten alive with that spot.

Hollywood Hogan at Wrestlemania X-8 (heel getting a pop)
Eugene at Summerslam 2004 (face getting heat)
You could argue these don't count because both happened in Canada

Roman Reigns in the 2014 Royal Rumble and Rusev in 2015 got cheered heavily as heels just because they were the last guy standing against the anointed winners (Batista and Reigns)
Diesel got pops and chants throughout the 1994 Rumble after he cleaned house, to the point where McMahon acknowledged it when he was finally eliminated.

for a few years stretch any canadian heel performing in canada. to the point where the wwe had to invent "Bizzarro land" for all their televised shows in canada to explain why these datardly heels were getting cheered to the rafters.

Nobody talks about that promo where Ryback yelled at Mick Foley about like everything and nothing at the same time cause he's bad Ryback in his beanie now and they should cause it was hilarious Ryback was f***ing entertaining and over, no matter how much (justifiable) shit he gets today

It's in fact opposite issues if you look at it from an issue of where those reactions come from instead of statically 'people cheer wrong'. Exactly. People cheering for a villain usually means the writers did too good a job of humanizing them or making their motives understandable even if their actions are deplorable. When people boo a hero, it's almost always because the character is poorly written or they have some really annoying, unsympathetic traits.
There is also sort of a power fantasy going on with a lot of villains where people wish they could act as they did without being bound by personal or societal ethics and morals. That's why you see people cheer for even completely irredeemable villains like The Joker. But that's going into a deep dive into psychology and Jungian psychiatry.

And then you have this crazy guy just appear and START FLIPPING AMBULANCES. I know who I am Cheering I'M NOT FINISHED WITH YOUAnd then it was all downhill from there both because booking and because he is Braun. But the whole Braun attacking an injured Roman over and over in the most over the top ways was amazing

Maybe not exactly the biggest pop, but Kurt Angle wanting to tap out Jesus (who'd he ever beat?) and saying he's not a fan of the "black people" with the whole point of the promo being that he would get cheered no matter what he did was quite the moment.
