Why wasn't it just a fatal-fourway? Like, did Foley have a book coming out that needed promotion, so they threw him in the match?

Nope. He had a contract for a set number of matches, I think it was his last one, and he could take a pin so that nobody else looked weak.
But yes it was weird. He was fifth wheel as f***.

Didn't see the Vengeance match, was it even more 'huh?' than him randomly getting thrown into the Wrestlemania 2000 Title match after retiring a few weeks prior?

Yes, vastly more weird, because it had no storyline motivation, and he was way less over and even less happy than he was seven years earlier.

It being out of nowhere wasn't helping, but honestly, I think part of the issue was people being kind of worried about his wellbeing. I know that was a major factor in dampening my enjoyment of his TNA run.

Yeah, I mean, I for one was very relieved when he mended fences with Vince, returned to the WWE fold and then after one Rumble appearance, never wrestled again. Foley was a great wrestler but I'd much rather he's gets to be wrestlings slightly goofy Christmas loving uncle for years to come.

I recall being upset that Sandman wasn't in this match even though Lashley was allowed in it as former ECW Champion.

They had also just done a fatal 4 way at backlash a few months later for the wwe title, so they probably wanted something different
