I go down this rabbit hole all the time honestly. I can’t say I have a favorite, but I’ll read about these people for hours on end.

Show me a serial killer, and I'll show you some twat that targeted people that society marginalised, and a whole bunch of incompetent cops. This is often the case, along with most serial killers being tremendously mundane in reality, but sensationalized by journalists and authors. There are some truly strange individuals like Albert Fish, but yeah, most serial killers were just mediocre creeps who chose easy targets, with often indifferent authorities that had to be dragged kicking and screaming towards solving the case. It's a lot easier to spin a killer as a mastermind than it is to admit that police were poorly trained or saw the murder of sex workers or minorities as boring and beneath them to put any effort into ending.

I'm a bit obsessed with Harold Shipman. its like Saville, how did he get away with it for so long. a doctor that targeted old people with a shorter life expectancy, old age with medical problems would be a good cover for what he was up to and there will be questions of "was it natural?" with any of his patients who died

H. H. Holmes. Became enthralled with his crimes after reading Devil in the White City. So bizarre.

He was caught because a new funeral director took over at a local company and complained to the corona that he was signing alot of death certificates. The people before her have a few question to answer for in my opinion, mainly how did you get so lacks at your job.

I love me some serial Killers too.
Albert Fish is probably my "favorite." Just an absolutely sick dude with a list of issues so long that it could make any psychiatrist in the world want to find a new job.
Henry Lee Lucas is interesting. The Starkweather murders are something. H.H. Holmes of course. Carl Panzram is another interesting one, possibly the least remorseful person ever. Oh! And BTK, too. His story is absolutely fascinating.
I could go on. I've read a lot.

I feel the thread title should be rephrased. The idea that people have a favorite person who murdered dozens of peoples doesn't sit well with me.

DragonKing Dark (hosted by Karl Stern) has quite a collection of podcasts about serial killers in his older archives. He's very informative and easy to listen.

What I feel is always interesting with this topic is that fact that the "best" ones will be completely unknown and will remain that way. Especially in America with the homeless/human trafficking situation, there's a lot of humans that slip thru the cracks if they go missing.
When I say "best" I by no means mean anything they did was good. They are horrible murderers. I mean "best" in the sense of they don't get caught/their pattern is never found/they are basically untraceable forces of evil.
It's kinda like the old hitman/ninja saying: " If you know them, they aren't that good". The best ones do their work and nobody (outside of those that set it up) ever knows it happened.
