So for those not familiar, the Carson City Silver Dollar Match occurred at WCW Bash at the Beach 1996 (an otherwise completely unremarkable PPV) between John Tenta and Big Bubba Rogers. The goal of the match was for these two 300+ lbs. men to shimmy up a pole and retrieve a sock filled with Silver Dollars to bludgeon each other with. It was about as successful as it sounds.
Here's my question - where did the Carson City Silver Dollar Match come from? Was it something that WCW made up whole-cloth just because they felt the match needed some kind of stipulation and a sock on a pole was as much effort as they wanted to put into that? Or, much like the much-maligned Coal Miners Glove Match from a few years earlier, was the Carson City Silver Dollar Match some kind of forgotten stipulation match that was actually some kind of draw in some territory at some point in time, and WCW bookers were genuinely trying to pay tribute to it? I'm really curious if there is actually any history behind it.
