The sushi thread made me think, I remember when chopsticks, outside of if you lived in cities with sizeable East Asian populations, were fairly exotic. The year I was born, McDonalds had a promotion with chicken mcnuggets that included the use of chopsticks, so it was definitely still a gimmick to a lot of people at the time. Like with sushi, that would change to where most cities in the US have Chinese food buffets, takeout places, etc, and the ones who do not will quite likely have Panda Express. Not a great option, but an option nonetheless.
Anyway, I was curious what the experience is with chopsticks on this forum. Personally, I can use them perfectly fine for most things. Eating rice isn't something I can do that handily with chopsticks, but food items like chunks of meat, vegetables, etc, I can eat fine with chopsticks. I actually do not remember learning how to use them, but I am pretty sure my friend Josh taught me when we went to Chinese buffets when I was in my early-ish twenties.

While I would not call myself a chopstick master, I can use them comfortably enough with any dish that requires them. But it certainly took a bit to get the hang of it.

Never been able to figure them out. I eat my Chinese with a fork.

Noodles and sushi with chopsticks. I eat everything else the way god intended: by dislocating my jaw and consuming it python style.

You’ll never guess where I learned how to use them: the Sable Playboy issue. Yes, really.
A diagram at the bottom of an article showed how to use them. I practiced with pens before trying them for real at a buffet. I can pick up noodles and pieces of meat, but for rice I use a fork.

Yup, since I was a kid, without any issues, although I guess half my family being Japanese is kind of a cheat code.

I lived in Taiwan for sixteen months and South Korea for three years. It was something of a necessity.

I can use them for sushi. Sushi is pretty easy to hold with chopsticks. I’m hopeless with anything else.

Can’t use chopsticks worth a damn, so I stopped eating out at Chinese restaurants like 10+ years ago

Don't really have a problem with them. Probably helps I live in an area with tons of Chinese/Japanese/Thai/etc. places, so I get plenty of chances to practice with them, but I have a bad habit of eating way too fast and chopsticks are a good way to get myself to keep the portions I'm biting into smaller if I fall into that habit.

That last bit reminds me of an incident my dad had. He was having a lot of issues with his weight, and on top of that was told he was pre-diabetic, so he asked the doctor what he should do. The doctor said “Well, we often recommend eating with chopsticks, as it’ll help you eat slower, so your body actually has time to take everything in” and my dad said “Doc…I’m half-Japanese…if anything it’ll just make me eat faster.” which left them at an impasse haha.

I kinda can't >_>
had issues in my hand when I Was younger they're cleared up now (thanks video games! no... seriously... Nintendo controllers helped me work out the issues) but due to it I basically hold things wrong.

Can't. Just lack the dexterity in my hands for it. Either I eat my rice in two ways; with a spoon and a fork, or with my bare hands. And am not joking about using my hands, as that's common here.

I can't hold a pen properly and frequently drop my fork, chopsticks are not something I can get my head (or fingers) around.

Yknow how they say its best to learn something as a kid? My dad did 6 month deployments in Okinawa every 2 years, so chopstick use was common in my house. I can literally pick up a granule of rice with them.

Since I'm unco as a mother f***er the answer is no.
Which is sort of embarrassing, as whenever I have to go any Asian resultant and ask for a knife and fork.

Nah, my hand/finger dexterity is practically in the negative, plus my hands will randomly switch which one wants to be dominant at the moment.
