Who's the Mickey Mouse of anime? A character who is synonymous with anime, and known even by people who don't watch anime?
Maybe Goku?

I'd say Astro Boy is maybe the most comparable. Pretty much ancient, instantly associated with the entire medium, art style directly derivative of Disney's, as famous as he is not really actually anybody's favorite.

This is about who's Mickey Mouse in terms of being well-known. Does the average person on the street really know who Astro Boy is? I doubt it.

I feel like you're pretty much asking a useless question in that case? From a western perspective anime just flat out isn't as famous as Disney is. I guess maybe Goku fits for that criteria but even then I'd imagine a lot of people not terribly familiar with the medium would just call him Dragon Ball or something. Actually a better example and one more likely to be recognized would probably be Pikachu. Imagine there's a pretty good subsection of people who know Pokemon more for the anime than the games.

In Asia it’s Doraemon, worldwide Pikachu with Goku/Luffy depending on your age coming second.

But honestly if you don't consider Hello Kitty anime and Pikachu as video game it's probably Goku

You could probably make the claim that it is also Mickey Mouse. Stuff like Astro Boy and other early anime's were based on the Walt/Mickey's style.

When he squeals he sounds like a mouse.

In terms of actual cultural context it's Astro Boy. Or Kimba the White Lion/Jungle Emperor, who is actually a baseball team mascot. *notices YMS glaring off in the distance*

I feel like Goku is more comparable to superheroes like Superman and Batman than Mickey Mouse.
