This was always interesting to me. I thought after the screwjob he would have been despised in Canada for the rest of time but it was pretty mixed.
After Survivor Series 1997 and the next night on Raw I think his next appearance in Canada was 6 years later at No Way Out 2003. He wasn't on the card but he ran in and attacked Jericho after his match and got a massively loud reaction, some cheers but mostly boos. Then there was the famous "who's your daddy, Montreal?" Raw but he was a heel and going for the boos that time. After that they were a lot easier on him. DX was cheered at Unforgiven 2006 and Breaking Point 2009 in Toronto and Montreal, respectively.
It's similar to Goldberg. Canada always hated him but then mellowed out in later years. Even before the superkick to Bret Canada hated him (he was booed out the building at Mayhem a month before that Starrcade match) and it continued during his first WWE run whenever they went there. Since his return though he got great babyface reactions in Canada at Survivor Series 2016 and Summerslam 2019.
Do you think it was a case of fans actually forgiving him or just older fans aging out and the younger fans attending later shows didn't really care about the Bret stuff?

My God, the heat in that "Who's Your Daddy" promo in Montreal. The crowd eruption when they played Bret's music was HUGE!!!

There was also the fact that Bret and Shawn buried the hatchet, so it was like "Well, if he ain't mad, why are we mad?"

The No Way Out in 2003 was around the time of the first WWE Confidential show where Shawn revealed to the shock of all (read - no one) that he was actually in on the Screwjob, after years of claiming he had no idea about it.
But you know, once Bret was actually in the HOF, he wasn't exactly this exiled nomad from WWE, even if it took a few more years to get to the point he felt able to go on TV again.

I've noticed that Bret isn't as revered these days with the consensus that he's too bitter - even if he has every right to be ten times as bitter as he is.

That Montreal crowd was on his head at backlash 2004.

Not sure where you're getting that perception. If anything, the passage of time and circumstances have elevated his legacy, not diminished it. While the Dungeon style isn't as "in vogue" anymore as it once was, it has left an indelible mark on the business.

That Montreal crowd was on his head at backlash 2004. The show was actually held in Edmonton, but I could see fans coming from even as far away as Montreal to see the event.

That Montreal crowd was on his head at backlash 2004. I love that match. The white hot hatred from the fans for Shawn is amazing, and despite nominally being booked as a face Michaels decides to just milk it for all it's worth. HBK has Benoit down, giant "YOU SCREWED BRET" chant, Michaels just slowly looks around with this contemptuous smirk, then puts Benoit in the sharpshooter. The entire arena boos their lungs out.
