It seems like whenever Vince Russo’s horrific run in WCW gets brought up, it seems like making David Arquette WCW dominates the discussion. But Russo briefly made himself champ too.
Despite what some influencers like to think personal branding has been around forever. A big part of Russo holding the title was probably just so he could market himself better and always be said to be a former WCW champ.
Yet, Russo’s run was so horrific mentioning this does nothing to help him these days. These days his big deal thing is trumpeting his role as WWF (more than 20 years ago) and saying he made The Rock and Stone Cold.

I think it gets less talk than Arquette because the WWF did a fairly equivalent bit with Vince McMahon holding the belt for a minute. Basically, "Both of them did this stupid thing, so the loser of the war should get attention for the other stupid thing."

because if you say his name too many times, vince russo makes a non-senseicle "swerve bro" run in.
it's a problem as he sticks around for a few days if your unlucky.

Vince Russo is a dumb out of touch racist.
Also, a sexist homophobe.

I think because the David Arquette title run contributed to WCWs demise. By the time Russo held the title things were pretty much done.

I was an admin for Vince Russo's Christian-themed message board back in the early 2000's. I was very religious at that time, but I also thought Russo was basically the anti-Christ of wrestling, so I'm not sure how I got that gig. As I recall, the board was populated mostly by Christian wrestling fans who had a grievance with the adult direction wrestling had taken. We had to ban lots of wrestling fans who would sign up just to bemoan Russo's change of heart. Yes, there were people out there who thought Russo was a creative genius. They actually started up a rival board just to talk about his tenures in creative, and acted like wrestling was pretty much dead since Russo had found religion.

I think because the David Arquette title run contributed to WCWs demise. By the time Russo held the title things were pretty much done. Yeah, pretty much. Despite Russo's controversial booking, people still thought WCW had a chance to turn things around when David Arquette won the title and wiped that notion out of their heads. When Russo won it WCW was more or less at their lowest and nobody really expected anything better from them at that point. Also less happened while Russo was champion. If I remember correctly he won the belt then almost immediately vacated and disappeared from television. Arquette won the title and they booked an entire PPV around it.

he held the belt for a week...
the Arquette reign was the final nail in WCW's coffin, that was before this
Russo as champion was equally bad but didn't completely nosedive the company and destroy the idea that WCW could to turn things around like Arquette's reign did

Does Russo still say "bro" like there's no tomorrow? Unless something has changed in the last 3 years, yes he does. I attempted to listen to a few episodes of Russo's, Truth With Consequences podcast at the recommendation of a friend. I listened on my way to work. I had to stop because by the time I got there I'd already be pissed off and in a bad mood and my work day hadn't even started yet. Bro.

Because everyone hates Russo and knows it was a bad idea. With discussion of Arquette you can say he did it under protest, he donated his fee to wrestlers and their families, while Russo you really do struggle to find any way to polish that turd, and he pushed out so many at that time.

Vince Russo is a dumb out of touch racist. Also, a sexist homophobe. Survivor series 1998 was a fantastically booked show however. The main 5 PPV's of 1998 he did great with. Then the calendar switched over to 1999 and it's like he was either depleted of any being able to be creative, or the WWF wasn't editing his idea's as much. I think a bit of both, since it's obvious when he is giving more creative power it is not good. He was good for WWF for 97 & 98, since it was only some of his idea's getting through and his general idea of the way the WWF should go (Being edgy, Springer like almost) was a good idea and worked. There's a video of him going through Dude Love's promo when he debuted, so the guy had good idea's. It's just once 98 ended and they soley only wanted all edgy idea's from him, the cracks started to show and 1999 doesn't hold up well, lucky for them 98 was such a gangbuster year no matter what they did in 99 people would watch.

I always forget is the honest answer, and I think thats because WCW so done by late 2000 that everything is forgettable. As messy as it was, from Jan-July 2000 I have a rough idea of the happenings, I feel like you get to August and I havent got a clue of much of what happened in that last period, the most memorable bit is the last Nitro

The booking even improved for the last few months and was at least somewhat coherent. However it was definitely a case of way too little, way too late.

Partly because you knew you weren't supposed to take Russo seriously as Champion, and the company already had a foot and a half in the grave.
With Arquette, you had no earthly idea what it was supposed to do.

It was better, but so many stars were gone the shows felt empty sometimes. Plus, Thunder was filmed in front of the Nitro audiences, who were exhausted by that time.
