After owning both the original two Evil Dead films on two different DVD releases, I figured it's time again to triple dip.
I have the amazing Shout Factory Army of Darkness blu, so I'm looking for something comparable both in terms of quality and extras. I hear the 4K Evil Dead release has the aspect ratio weirdly messed up, so in lieu of that one, which is the best version of either film to get? Or is there a new one announced on the way?

Sucks every DVD and blu ray release isn't the original version of Evil Dead. Rami went back in right before the first DVD release and redid that badly matted in moon shot from the first film.

the fan made Evil Dead Treasures is maybe the best if you can count fan made stuff. They released a blu ray edition of the old DVD a few years ago that improved on a ton of things and I think that might be the best attempt at a completely untouched original Evil Dead experience, right down to the recreated original title.

the Treasures collection also has an amazing copy of Within The Woods. Not the best i've ever seen since I think one of the guys from Synapse had a personal first gen copy from when it was supposed to be on the original DVD release but that sadly has never made it out there.

I thought the original Elite Entertainment DVD of Evil Dead was untouched before they messed with it for Anchor Bay?

It might be,but isn't that just a port of the Elite LD?

I thought the original Elite Entertainment DVD of Evil Dead was untouched before they messed with it for Anchor Bay? It might be,but isn't that just a port of the Elite LD? The Elite versions, turns out, are not untouched. Been doing a dive way deeper than I anticipated when I made this thread and the Elite Entertainment DVD in the states takes out a shot of lightning hitting a tree at Raimi's request. Apparently there's a German DVD from around that same time (1999) that has no cuts and is the full original version, as well as a mid-90s Japanese laserdisc that's 100% identical to the original. I believe either the Elite or the very very first Anchor Bay DVD added a zoom-in on a face that wasn't in the original. And then from there you have a number of other changes from 2002 onwards. I like Sam Raimi so I don't in any way mean this as a slight, but with all the changes over the years he's like a well-received George Lucas considering all the variations.

Oddly enough they left that one shot that caught a crew member in on that DVD lol

Oddly enough they left that one shot that caught a crew member in on that DVD lol They did indeed, which really tells you how much Sam Raimi must have hated that lightning effect that he got rid of that first. It seems the closest any American home media has come to the original was the 1987 HBO VHS release, but even that has some weird unintentional color tints.
