I have this book. I think we can agree that in addition to being WAY outdated (it was made in early 2000) it may not be all that good.
In one chapter, The Rock says that him and his now ex-wife Dana could no longer go to the movies anytime they want nor could they go to the mall anytime they want. He said he gets all his Rock gear from a place called Lucky’s in Miami (according to the Rock, it specializes in only the finest apparel.) I googled that place to find out if it’s still around but I got nothing. I wonder if it’s still around.

“Not all that good” is an understatement. It’s shite. Foley’s first book may have been unfair as it set a ridiculously high standard that has rarely been equalled over twenty years later but with The Rock’s book coming out not long after, people were expecting a book on a similar level. Instead we got that.

Complete garbage. Entirely in character and just annoying to read. Love the Rock, but his ghost writer did him dirty with that one.

"The Rock Says" being the title of a book with such a blatant ghost writer is at least kind of funny. Perhaps, "The Rock Says into a tape recorder" would be more accurate.

It could be common knowledge but is the book written in third person?

Mick coming out with his first book brought on a barrage of wrestler books super quickly. We had Rock, Austin, Chyna, Angle. Mick's was set apart, much like Bret's, was done by himself so it was noticeably different and better. I don't recall too many autobiographies from wrestlers prior. Ted Dibiase did one in late 97, early 98 and Arn Anderson did one around the same time as Mick and was entirely kayfabe. Dynamite Kid was around the same time. Mick's book was a trendsetter and maybe not in a good way, it showed a market for wrestler autobiographies and they weren't nearly as good as Mick's.

The only positive thing I can say about the book is that it made for a pretty funny weapon to pull out of the crowd in No Mercy.

I still would call it a net positive since ones like Jericho's trended towards good.

Yeah I didn’t like this book. Especially the pages where he’d go from talking about his life non kayfabe and then you’d get 2 pages of a Rock promo before going back to non kayfabe again.

That and the Kurt Angle book are the worst wrestler autobiographies I've read.

I had this and was very confused by the in-kayfabe sections. Am I remembering correctly and was the part where he graphically describes his first sexual experience at 14 written in "The Rock-style" too? That's basically the only part I remember from the whole thing.

So how much of it lines up with Young Rock?
Does it change things as much as YR does?

It's ghost written in a really weird way - part humble Dwayne, parts scripted as though heel Rock wrote it - which really hurts the sympathy of the person the book is about. (And it's about The Rock ffs, one of the nicest people in wrestling!)
I like some of the Owen stories he got them to write up though. We know better now that Bret and Owen were mentors to Rock, but the one bit that struck me is how upset he was about Owen's death.
There are two people in the book that Rock clearly wanted them to express how much he loved. The book keeps going back to them. Owen, and his dad.
It's quite slim and a very flippant book (the ghost writer doesn't dig into the dark periods of depression or facing racism as a kid that Rocky just casually mentions then changes the subject) but the real guy Dwayne Johnson keeps popping up in it now and again throughout.
He could probably write a decent autobiography tbh. It'd be miles better.

I'd love for Dwayne to eventually release a real memoir. There would be so much to talk about, from growing up in the business, his run in WWE and reaching the top, and becoming a Hollywood star.
