Can anybody tell me what brought this on? I am sure that it was in the summer of 1998 when he started wearing the chest protector, but what was the story behind it? Also, when did he stop wearing it? Was it in November or was it December of 1998? I remember some people made jokes about it, calling him a catcher because of the chest pad.

He was 'injured' in a match against Severn, started wearing it after that because of a torn pectoral muscle.

I believe the last appearance was at Summerslam 1998 when Val Venis took it off him and hit a Money Shot on a ref with it on. But I may be misremembering.

I loved this gimmick. D'Lo was great.

You are right about Venis using it for a post-match Money Shot, but D'Lo kept the vest for pretty much the rest of the year. It was around the turn of the year when they did the Terri "miscarriage" angle with D'Lo, which resulted in him and Mark Henry going babyface, and that's where the chest protector gimmick was phased out.

This was a good fun gimmick at the time but did drag on a bit too long

D lo was using the protector well into 1999. He stopped using it when he turned face and introduced Ivory to Mark Henry. No on air explanation was given as to why he stopped using it. It was believed in kayfabe that he was using it well after his muscle healed and was using it for an unfair advantage.

It was believed in kayfabe that he was using it well after his muscle healed and was using it for an unfair advantage. More than believed. He was using it to make the Lo Down more impactful. When he was defending the European Title against Val Venis, he nearly lost at Summerslam 98, then had the chest protector reinforced and with it, ended Venis' undefeated run. There was even a spot where Venis hit a forearm to the chest protector and sold his arm while D-Lo laughed.
