I feel like this is one of those feuds that's pretty much been forgotten. I attended SummerSlam live that year and even I forget about it, though I do remember Hogan maybe getting the biggest pop that night.
What are your thoughts on this one?

It was fine. Nowhere near the quality of the Hogan match at Summerslam the year prior but decent enough.
I recall the rumor was that Orton was originally booked to win with Brooke getting involved causing Hogan to be distracted and him turning around into an RKO but he either failed a wellness test or had some other kind of backstage issue (not unusual for him around that time) a few weeks before the PPV. Instead of suspending him and cancelling the match they decided his punishment would just be to change the finish and take away his big win.
One of Hogan’s less famous lies involves this match too. He did an interview sometime later and said that because his match was so early on the card, everyone got what they wanted and started leaving the arena in droves with multiple matches still to go which is complete bullshit.

Haha, yes, I can confirm the crowd leaving in droves is BS. They were electric for Cena vs. Edge from what I can remember.

He was obviously just bitter about not going on last.

This was essentially when I knew the Legend Killer gimmick was over.
You can't call yourself that and constantly come up short. Yeah, I know he did beat Undertaker, but it was after losing to him at 'Mania...just seemed like hot cold booking with Orton.
Even if Hogan had to win (which he definitely shouldn't have here), you could have gone the DQ route or something. Randy looked foolish losing to Hogan at this stage.

I mostly remember it for someone making it into one of the "Mmm, Whatcha Sayyyyyy" Imogen Heap/Dear Sister parodies that were big around that time.

the notion of Hogan ever going over anyone again after Shawn made him look like the crippled old man he was was just a bridge too far for me.

They should have done Cena vs Hogan instead. I know Cena wasn’t super Cena at the time but it could have been special.

The Edge/Cena feud was too hot to push aside for Hogan, especially considering he'd probably demand to go over. Take this for what it's worth because it could be another of his lies but Hogan claims he was going to face Cena in the main event of Wrestlemania 25 until he had some injury which needed surgery a month or two before the show.

Now I wish they would have done Edge vs Hogan instead of Orton seeing as how there’s history with Edge and Hogan as a team.

Edge vs Cena was the hottest feud WWE had going and the crowds were molten for both dudes. Absolutely no way WWE should have pushed aside either of them for the rapidly breaking down Hogan.
