Game of Thrones Sequel Series About Jon Snow In Development

HBO is developing a Game of Thrones sequel series revolving around the continuing adventures of Jon Snow, with actor Kit Harington attached to return. George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire translated into television gold when HBO brought Game of Thrones to life back in 2011. Now, three years since it came to an end after season 8, the network remains very interested in expanding the franchise with various spinoffs. The first, House of the Dragon, is set to premiere this August.

Harington's Jon Snow was a key figure throughout Game of Thrones' run. An honorable bastard, Jon would play a pivotal role in the series' shifting plots, and most notably was featured in one of its biggest twists when he was killed off in season 5, only to be revived later. At the end of Game of Thrones, Jon was banished from Westeros for killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), his lover and newly-revealed aunt; he went north beyond the Wall with the Wildlings and finally seemed to be at peace.

Now it seems that peace might not last for much longer. THR has revealed that HBO is now developing a potential Game of Thrones sequel series centered on Jon Snow. The series is still in very early development, but should it move forward, Harington is attached to reprise his role as Jon. No members of the creative team have been announced at this point.

This is a major development for HBO's growing Game of Thrones franchise. Even before the flagship series came to an end, the network began working on potential offshoots. What's notable about the Jon Snow project is that it is the first potential Game of Thrones spinoff that would take place after the series ended; everything else that is currently in the works, which includes 10,000 Ships and 9 Voyages, are prequels. However, it isn't surprising that HBO is now looking to push the timeline forward. Despite its propensity for killing characters, Game of Thrones ended with a number of people still alive and all ready to potentially lead their own spinoff.

As Jon left Westeros in the Game of Thrones season 8 finale, he is undeniably one of the characters best suited to lead a new story. His adventures beyond the Wall can allow for a greater exploration of this aspect of Martin's world and could perhaps lead to the introduction of new creatures. Some might be quick to say that Game of Thrones already spent a significant amount of time beyond the Wall, and they wouldn't be wrong. However, without a need to return to the storylines in Westeros, this Jon Snow-led sequel can go deeper than ever before into what lies far in the north. Plus, there's a good chance other fan favorite characters like Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) could put in return appearances. With House of the Dragon rapidly approaching, it isn't clear how big of a priority the Game of Thrones sequel is for HBO. However, with a popular character like Jon involved, there is a good chance this show could move forward quickly if the creative team falls into place soon.

I will say that even with how Season 8 went I would still be interested seeing something deal with that "there's something way past the beyond the wall area in the Land of Always Winter that's super incredibly mysterious and nobody knows about it" thing.

For sure. There can also be some drama weaned from the challenges of rebuilding a society previously only held together by fear of a threat that no longer exists.

There's also plenty of unfinished business in Jon's story. The Unsullied weren't exactly satisfied with the compromise that led to him being exiled instead of executed. Daario and the Second Sons probably wouldn't have been too pleased with how events played out either once word reached them. Hell, with the Red Priestesses in play you probably can't rule out a pissed-off Dragon Queen back from the dead and looking for revenge.

It's a bit soon, wait a generation like Star Wars did and then have an aging Jon, Sansa, Tyrion ect mentoring the next generation of Starks and Lannisters, see if anything has changed. Lots of potential for stories such as Drogan's return, a undiscovered tribe of White Walkers, Essos invasion, Aya's return with whatever she found, the maesters conspiracy (more hinted at in the books) and so on...

I'm of two minds on this.

1. Jon Snow is probably the worst of the surviving main characters you could base a sequel series on; dour, sullen, and would need to be surrounded by a great supporting cast (Tormund baby!!) to keep me interested.

2. There is a LOT of stuff they can explore, literally and figuratively. Plenty of intriguing threads and places and characters to develop, and starting from scratch with a new story (probably aided by GRRM; anything to put off finishing TWOW right?) will be much better than adapting some of the story and coming up with the rest.

Well if they wanna fix the complete botch that was the final season of GOT maninly the complete character assasination of Danny then use this to do it.

Have the Red Priestnesses bring back Danny and give her a redemptive ark....since it has long been a theory Drogan took Dannys body to the Red Priestess's to get her ressurected.

Still think he should have ended on the Iron Throne. Yes I know it's predictable and GOT always has to swerve, but I felt so unsatisfied after thay finale. Something about seeing this character who we were invested in for like 10 years end up right back at the wall was heartbreaking for me, and not in a good way. And he isn't even in like my top 10 fav chars on the show.

I’m semi-convinced HBO have an internal pool to see how many times they can lap GRRM bringing the OG saga to an end.

For the record, the books will never be finished. Run from it, deny it, even bargain with it but it’s inevitable. They’re done. They were great but I’ve slowly come to terms with them being modern Fantasy’s biggest ‘what if?’

I echo the sentiments that Jon Snow is a reactive character, so the quality of any show involving him is contingent on the cast surrounding him. Well, that and the fact it’ll have to be the greatest thing on television to overcome the immense poor will generated by Season 8.

One of the downsides to a post season 8 GOT related show is that the characters played by the strongest actors (Headey, Allen, Coster-Waldau, van Houten, Hill) are all dead. Peter Dinklage & Liam Cunningham are great, but they are not strong enough to carry the series themselves.

I've seen a decent amount of GoT fanfiction that basically finds a way to retcon the stupidity of Season 8. Bit easier in an explicitly magic-based setting, for sure, though the biggest caveat with that is how far back do you go in the save file before pulling a Flowey and reloading?

Either way, would definitely be down with that or for any other magical means of either undoing stupid plotting or just bringing back characters killed for stupid reasons. This is their big chance to reconcile the franchise in the eyes of pretty much everyone, so yeah, they better plan this out pretty damn well & keep W&B the hell away from it.

Now let's get a do-over of the Star Wars sequels with the same cast but with the creative teams from Mando & Obi-Wan, please.

It should be a travel/educational show called "You Know Nothing, Jon Snow". Where he journeys to all parts of the world and learns about its cultures and inhabitants. He can borrow Littlefinger's jetpack to help expeditehis travels. Not like good old Petyr has much use for it anymore.
