Looking into this also reminded me of when they tried to get over calling Kane the One-Eyed Monster.

Yeah, Tazz used to yell THE MANSTER! all the time... I guess they figured he got "Here comes the pain" over... they could get anything over, and they couldn't exactly continue calling Brock "The NEXT BIG THING" after he's demolished everyone.

I wasn't on the internet during pre-UFC Brock, how was he percieved at the time? I vaguely remember liking him as a wrestler but not really thinking of him as a real star, just a big scary monster for heroes like Angle and Eddie to take down.

I 100% remember this. It was all over WWE.com when he turned heel in 2003.

Didn't they also call him the "Vanilla Gorilla" at least a few times? Either on his debut or the week after.

It's never a good sign when your big scary wrestler nickname can lead people to infer he's half man, half hamster.

I think the best way to put it in terms of them pushing him as a real star is that they used his catchphrase as the name of their franchise video game (with him as the cover star), something that had only previously been done for The Rock.

Becky Lynch absolutely needs to hijack this nickname as she descends into madness.

I assume this had to be a Jim Ross idea, since it had previously been the nickname of an old Dallas Cowboys player.

Remember when they tried to call Roman "The Juggernaut" and Finn was "The Extraordinary Man Who Can Do Extraordinary Things"
Thank god they eventually found fun little Red Barons for them. "The Tribal Chief" and "The Prince" are both nice and simple.

"The Tribal Chief" and "The Prince" are both nice and simple. And the way they said Finn's made it sound like "The Extraordinary Man Who Can Do Extra Ordinary Things" which sounds like an amazingly talented person who can do incredibly normal things.
